Visiting Berling on Dec. 26th-29th - is it worth it?
by oritso
We plan be in Berlin for 4 days, from Dec. 29th, which is a Friday and Boxing Day, to the 29th. We heard that most attractions would be closed on these days: museums, shops etc. Is that true? should we cancel that trip? and if so, could anyone rcommend another European city that is open for business on these days?
Thanks for your help!

Friday Dec. 26 is a Friday, Saturday 27 isn't, but people may well be "bridging", Sunday 28 is a Sunday, Monday 29 is not a public holiday but normal museum closing day in most of Europe (however in Berlin not all will be closed, see http://www.smb.spk-berlin.de/smb/service/index.php?n=3&objID=0&p=5&lang=en).
Dec. 26 is not a public holiday in Belgium, so in Brussels, for instance, everything is open on the 26th and 27th but of course shops are closed on Sunday (except in the Sablon-Marolles area between the antiques market and flea market).

I did almost exactly the same trip in 2005, arriving on the evening of 26 December. All the museums and shops we wanted to visit were open then. I can't remember whether we were there over a weekend, but I think it's very unlikely that museums that normally open at the weekend would be closed. For opening hours see this link.

As it is written in the posted smb-link, all museums are open as usual (some close monday).
Most shops (except some tourist shops and the ones at railway stations) are closed the 26th.
So: Mostly business as usual.
Stativi, SallyM and Gaminary - thank you so much!

you solved our dillema. it seems we're heading to Berlin after all.
Has any of you done or heard anything about the Christmas tour, dinner and concert in Charlottesburg? is it worth the price?

Shops are closed on the 26th (Boxing Day) and 28th (Sunday).
Saturday will be mayhem on the shopping front.
Museums and sights will be open.
Only Mondays many museums are closed, but not the most important ones. However I would rather plan the shopping part on Monday.
Public transport: extended night schedule on all nights apart from the So/Mo night (still 24 hours service but e.g. by night buses instead of U-Bahn (metro)).
Travel Tips for Berlin
The Weather
by grishaV1
The weather in Berlin really varies depending on the seasons, and these days you can´t count on one year being similar to the last years weather. In 2004 for example, in winter it was relatively warm without snow most of the season, while in 2005 we had a period of daily snow for a number of weeks, and extremely cold weather. What is always usual is the rain. Before I came back to Europe I always thought of Ireland or the UK being the rainy countries, but Berlin gets a lot of rain. In spring and fall/winter especially its important to have a hat or hood or umbrella with you at all times because though the morning might come bright without clouds, by afternoon or even some times in less than an hour clouds have blown over and rain begins.
Summer can be extremely hot for a city without true rain showers but often stormy afternoons with thunder which soon pass over. Many people take advantage of the summer holiday months to visit families homes or vacation houses outside or near the edges of the city. You will notice while riding the S-bahns or autobahns especially, little communes of small houses with gardens fenced and taken care of. Inside of staying in their flats, often people go to such little homes for summer days.
So in winter, the days can be very cold with rain or snow generally, so always have a hat with you or in a pocket to pull out if necessary. Scarves are very important as well and you rarely see people without them. Even in cold weather they might have on a light jacket but still will have a scarf. Very important to keep the neck and chest warm. Compact umbrellas are handy to keep winter or summer.
In summer it can be extremely hot, and no surprise to see people wearing at little as possible, or taking a swim in local lakes, laying out to catch the sun. Many people say Berliners are not very friendly, but I find that in summer when they days are blue and sunny almost everyone has a smile to give unlike in the rainy cold days of winter. Laying out in some park or another enjoying the sun, taking the baby for a stroller ride and being out in nature.
Public Art
by TempNomad
We found this little bit of political art while walking around Berlin. There were some very clever pieces of graffiti and some disappointingly typical ones. I'm always disappointed when people who decide to forcibly grace us with their art don't at least give it a point or an appreciable aesthetic. This was cute, not because of the over-used message, but because the little Ampel Manner look pretty good in uniform.
Tegelersee
by nigelw6443
Okay you may fly in to Tegel airport and depart from there, but apart from that you are unlikely to visit Alt Tegel. Well, that would be a shame as Tegel has a very nice town centre and a pedestrian street that leads you down to the Lake. There are many bars and restaurants and in the summer it is really nice to sit outside and enjoy a drink or bite to eat and watch the locals. During the day there are many boat trips available around the lake with boats serving food and drink and at weekends they have party boats which do just that.
Easy to find just hop on U6 to Alt Tegel and do a left out of the station.
Kaufhaus des Westens - Ka-De-We
by challenger about KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens)
The Kaufhaus des Westens (Department Store of the West), short: Ka-De-We, is Berlin’s most famous department store and a shopaholic’s paradise. It seems to have everything but a pet store. (Believe me, I checked as I wanted to buy a new leash for our dog.) After an hour or two of shopping around I made the mistake of bringing The Blonde up to the 6th Floor, a vast gigantic food hall that has absolutely every delicacy you ever wanted to try. A few pounds heavier – and I’m not counting shopping bags here, folks – and we finally left the store.
Badische beer
by nigelw6443 about Rothaus
This bar is not too far from the main street of Oranianburger strasse. The prices are reasonable especially for a cocktail. They have food and beer specials, play good music and it is open until late.
Rothaus is also the name of the brewer, but the beer is not brewed on the premises. Casual
