Germany has built a new "Government Quarter that spans the Spree, and whose goal it is to help bridge the distance that still exists between East and West Berlin, and between East and West Germany. This part of the governmental complex houses some of the offices of the Bundestag. It was designed by the Berlin-based firm of Stephan Braunfel. The Paul Löbe Haus is part of a larger "axis" of governmental structures that makes up part of a grand scheme, the "Bande des Bundes," or ribbon of government. Accordingly, twin pedestrian bridges span the Spree, forming a connection with the Marie Elizabeth Lüders Haus.
