Tropical Island

by SaschaSER

Guten tag. :)

Have any one been to Tropical Island?
Is enough to be there seven hours?
And what's like there?

Thank you.

I have not been to Tropical Islands in Berlin but a similar attraction in Bremerhaven, named Klimahaus. This was fantastic.

Tropical island a a huge dome like building which was constructed in the 1990s to built modern Zepplins. Now it is a leisure park, an hour south east of Berlin. If you don´t mind Disney-like artificial envirements, it is worth while going, especially with cildren. There is a tropical forest, two beaches, exotic wooden houses from Thailand and Indonesia, several restaurants, a playground for kits, sauna facilities, shows and much more. You can even stay over night in a hut or a tent, if you feel like. Better avoid weekends and bank holidays, because it can be very crowded and you´ld have to wait quite a while to get into.It attracts many people from neighbouring Poland as well. see www.tropical-islands.de

Travel Tips for Berlin

Learn basic german!

by Moni87dk

When I were in Berlin I learned that my school german came very much in hand! Not that germans don´t speak english, but there is a lot who prefer talking german. When asking people questions, we mixed between german and english and they apprecieted that. Also when you get on the canaltours the only language spoken is german. So therefore my advice is to learn the basic stuff. Things like common frases, but also how to say left/right (links/Recht) and so on.

Gendarmenplatz

by jonkb

This must be one of Berlins most beautifull places. The name comes from 'gendarmerie', wich is sort of a militariazed police. It was the Hugenots that, expelled from france, setled in Berlin with the kaisers blessing. Some of them became one of his most trusted soldiers. Hence the name. The two churches are the german and the french church, and you can guess the rest (or read about it in a guidebook).
The picture is taken with a fisheye lens.
The Frasösicher kirche has an interesting museum of the hugenots story. Inside the church there was an interesting display of wooden heads. The tower was also worth going up all the steps. Pictures in the Travelogue.

Do not leave Berlin before...

by oja

Do not leave Berlin before you've seen a cabaret or a drag queen show. These are genuine Berliner things with a long tradition started in decadent 20's when Berlin was pretty much what Amsterdam is today. If you're an avid reader familiar with Doeblin and Isherwood, you won't have problem recognising the lingering spirit of Berlin, Alexanderplatz and Goodbye to Berlin.

Seelowe hoeher or Seelow...

by bmiller39

Seelowe hoeher or Seelow Heights..about 30 miles due East of Berlin on Hwy 1 (a very scenic drive). This is a small town almost on the Polish border that saw a great deal of fighting in WWII. The Germans made their final stand against the Russians reportedly to buy time for the civilians of Berlin to escape..There was extremely fierce fighting and many of the emplacements and positions are still in place..The best restaurant in town is the Schwarzer Adler (Black Eagle ?) and that also does double duty as a hotel. There is a small museum on the way to the polish border (hwy1) that is magnificent in its historical presentation of the battle..they have a regurlarly scheduled video show and if you ask the curator he will provide it in English. Also a lighted map table portraying the troop movements etc...THIS IS WORTHY OF A TRIP !

Souvenirs at Unter den Linden

by matcrazy1 about Souvenir shops

I found a few souvenir/gift shops on southern side of Unter deb Linden, the representative boulevard of former East Berlin, close to Brandenburg Gate. Hmm... very touristy area and rather kitschy staff there - a lot of Berlin's bears. Beautiful postcards. 0.40 - 0.80 € per postcard.
