Great breakfast ~ interesting shower!

We got a very good deal at this four star hotel through Lastminute.com and on the whole were very pleased with it. Plus points included the good-sized room, very comfortable bed, quietness (our room opened onto an internal courtyard, but the street seemed generally quiet too), the nearness to the Ostbahnhof with its choice of several S-bahn lines, and a fantastic buffet breakfast (included in our rate). On the negative side, there is little to see or do in the immediate area, especially in the evening, and the lack of air-conditioning made the room a little too warm when Berlin experienced a bit of a late May heat-wave on our last day there. One feature of the room, too, may be a problem for some, especially if you are travelling with a not too-close friend, or maybe a parent – the shower cubicle is in full view of the room (see my 2nd photo). If you don't want your travelling companion to see you shower, or vice versa, you might want to stay elsewhere!

Unique Quality: We however were very happy here, and especially at breakfast time. The buffet was really quite a spread, with far too much to choose from for anyone of average appetite to be bored! The array of goodies included:
~ yoghurts (natural and fruit flavoured) and quark
~ breakfast cereals of various kinds
~ orange and grapefruit juice
~ fresh fruits – banana, apple, melon, pineapple, grapes, on one day strawberries
~ eggs, boiled or scrambled
~ bacon, sausage, meat patties
~ several different loaves, all delicious, and a selection of rolls
~ four or five cheeses
~ a similar number of cold meats
~ three or four different jams
~ other spreads such as Nutella, Philadelphia cheese etc
~ salads – potato, olives, tomatoes, etc etc
~ coffee ( a generous thermos jug brought to the table, or made to order cappuccino or latte macchiato), or a variety of teas
~ and the crowning touch, that I have never seen elsewhere – a selection of vitamin and mineral pills (although how anyone could fail to get a balanced selection from that spread is beyond me!)

Try Hotel reservation Service as a website. It's a German site with lots of hotels to choose from and some good deals. We used the Villa Amadeus in Potsdamerstrasse on our last 2 visits. It was cheap in November 2006 but much more expensive at Easter. See what their prices are like for May. HRS is well worth having a look through for a wide range of hotels.

A couple weeks ago I stayed at the Hotel Innside for just 125 euros a night. It's not in the Mitte (center) but it's just about a 15 minute walk from Alexanderplatz. Plus, it's right next to the Ostbahnhof (main East Berlin train station) so getting around on the U Bahn or S Bahn is no problem. It's a nice hotel with cool rooms and a trendy modern atmosphere. However, there's no real bars/restaurants in the immediate vicinity. But, again, you can get to a cool neighborhood in minutes. Here's their website:

Good luck.
