Brandenburger Tor
by JUNLI
The landmark Brandenburger Gate, Berlin's only surviving city gate, was once the boundary between East and West Berlin. Now, it is a very symbol of reunification.
Unfortunately, when I was there, the whole gate was under reconstruction with a special *dress* hid everything behind. Did not have a chance to see it seriously.
Recycling Containers - the Pfand
by johngayton
I noticed quite a few people around the city checking the public litter bins and fishing out the plastic drinks bottles. This wasn't just the down-and-outs but quite respectably-dressed folk.
Now I know why - Germany introduced a law in 2002 requiring that a deposit be charged on single-use drinks containers (with a couple of exceptions). This law is known as the Einwegpfand and the applicable bottles are stamped Pfand. Retailers are obliged to refund this deposit in cash and at the time of my visit (June 2010) this deposit was 25 Eurocents which of course makes it worthwhile for the collectors.
Useful if you're travelling on a tight budget!

You can spent the whole day at that mall. You'll find bookshops, clothes, shoes, electronic . . . at the 3 stories. In the basement are a lot of snack bars and at the ground floor there are very often very interesting exhibitions everything till you creditcard crashs
Getting around
by Mariajoy
In my experience, the public transportation in this city is one of the best. Trams, buses, trains and underground all run efficiently and don't charge their customers extortionate fares.
For 6.30E the traveler can buy a Tageskarte - a day card which covers all the zones A. B and C and all forms of transportation and lasts until 3am from when you first validate it in the ticket machine!. You can buy them from Tourist Info offices, or on the bus or at the ticket office or machine. A real bargain!! They are a little cheaper if you only want to cover two zones during your trip.
