Camping Kohlhasenbrück: Camping Kohlhasenbrück
about 17 DM/ night for one person + tent. hot showers cost 50 pfennig.
It's the only campsite you can reach with the U/S-Bahn-system, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. There's a kitchen and washingmachines. Be sure to arrive before 9pm, otherwise you won't get in anymore!

The Backpacker: The Backpacker
25 DM/bed, small extra charge for sheets
It's one of the cheapest hostels in Berlin. Besides this it's clean, right in the centre, there's a bar and a kitchen, there's max. 6 beds a room (so no bunk beds), there's a good atmosphere but it's not noisy, and staff is friendly and helpful. In other words, this is the perfect place!

Frederik's Hostel: Frederik's Hostel
Although Frederik's is no longer open I am keeping it on my page because I think it was one of the best hostels that I stayed in. It was a friendly place that catered to backpackers and offered a clean, safe and fun place to stay and the staff was amazing. I'm sad to see it close down. If anyone has any idea what happed to Frederik's or their staff please let me know. I hope you're doing well Sarah!
Very friendly, knowledgeable staff and affordable prices. Grocery store right across the street and walking distance from the East Side Gallery. Also very close to S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations.

Well, actually I never found a hotel or inn in Berlin.
The first time when we got there and failed to find a bed in Youth Hotel, then we decided to transfer to other cities.
I planned to go to Koln by the last train that night.
I was not familiar with the info board in the platform, and also I made a mistake - I think Koln is the last station for that train, but it's not. (quite stupid? ^^, anyway....)
So since I didn't see Koln showing on the board, I didn't catch any train till the last one had passed.
I felt quite strange first for no train came any more, then I asked a guy working there, and he said the next train to Koln is at 5AM.
I was stuned for a few seconds when I heard that. I guess I could not find any hotel at that time(I mean cheap hotel, hehe). Finally I decided to stay in the station for one night.
Actually it was still quite crowded in the station even around midnight. Many young people sat or slept on the floor. I guess they might be in the similar situation as me. So I felt better since no only me stay there.
I sat on the floor and wrote my travelling diary for some time. But I could not finished it cause too sleepy. I didn't want to fall asleep there, for a little bit fear. So I tried to keep sane and walked here and there. Many people and cars were still crowded in the street outside. But it got much colder at ngith, so I didn't want to get out.
Finding a place and sitting on the stairs, - around me many young people sat there - I felt sleepy and a little bit boring. What should I do? No idea....Then I drew some sketches for fun. However, it was just a way to keep not falling aleep too soon........
I caught the first train to Koln in the morning and finished that unforgetable night in Berlin station.
When I told my German friend about that night's experiece, he said:' Why not call me, silly girl? I have many good friends living in Berlin, they are sure to give you a bed!'
'Well,' I said, 'I might be silly.......but it was really a unique experience to me. I like it.'
Yes, actually I enjoyed that night. And Berlin becomes a very special city to me after then :).

I found a great little hotel...
I found a great little hotel through the net, Hotel Connection in the western part of Berlin, what used be the American Sector. It was a nice little place with all the comforts. The owners were very helpful and friendly. My room had cable T.V., my own private bathroom complete. From my window, I could see the daily life of Berliners, as they go about their daily business.
Great hosts, nice and clean, wonderful breakfast buffet in the mornings. It is located on the 3rd or 4th floor of a building.

25 DM per person per night. Make reservations in advance during the summer season.
Great staff, great facilities, reasonable rates, great location, great, great, great. Generally regarded as one of the best in Europe, and I won't argue with that. They've got everything you'd need, plus lots of connections for all sorts of fun around town. I've stayed there twice and cannot recommend it enough.

We were accosted at the Zoo...
We were accosted at the Zoo station by a little old woman Frau Wurst = if she accosts you, I implore you to follow her, she is brilliant, and the flat she offers = at thirty marks a night - is fantastic...it has a bath in the kitchen, under the sink!!! She is short and lively, about fiftyfive, with glasses, blondeish hair, and a mad personality - she hit this woman on the bus because she had sat in a seat that she wanted us to sit in!!! The private flat is in the east and centrally located. Big warm beds too. You will find that places like this are readily available, but if Edeltraud Wurst finds you, do it - you'll never stop laughing. Read her book of comments, what everyone syas is true = they all say, trust this woman, she speaks no english (she loved me speaking german and wouldnt shut up, but she had interesting stories, really) but she's the best. Otherwise, there are hostels all over but they say you must book ahead. So they say...
