The Berlin Wall
by keeweechic
The former barrier which surrounded West Berlin and became the symbol of the Cold War. It was built on August 13, 1961 with 96 miles (155 km) of barbed wire barricade and concrete wall which had an average height of 11.8 ft (3.60 m). On November 9, 1989 East Berlin open the border and the wall was torn down by end of 1990 as Communism collapsed and Cold War came to an end.
Black-yellow uniforms
by matcrazy1
Berlin's postwomen and postmen were dressed in nice looking black-yellow uniforms as on my picture. They were working hard using various vehicles (bicycles usually) on Saturday morning when I met a few of them including one pretty postwoman but... I was afraid to take a picture of her. Hmm... I am not at all paparazzi.
Must one be pretty (women) or handsome (men) to get a job in Bundespost (German Post) ?
Former checkpoint Staaken at British sector
by Maria250
Former checkpoint Staaken (Berlin-Spandau) was located at the British sector. Right after the begin of the fall of the "Iron Curtain" we did a trip to checkpoint Staaken with our bikes. It felt odd biking along the wall and recognizing the workers that already had started to tear down that thing. Very excited (yet confused too) we did about a 12 miles biking tour from Berlin-Spandau/Staaken to the "opened" town of Henningsdorf (former GDR).
Today in Berlin-Spandau/Staaken most likely no piece of the wall is left (except for a memorial) yet the area itself is still some beautiful countryside away from the hectic of Berlin's center and can be easily explored on a biking or walking tour.
This link provids some good informations on the wall and history

Trendy, good quality clothes
by matcrazy1 about H & M
It was the first H&M store I ever visited. I got to know that H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) company was established in Sweden in 1947.
In Berlin they sold clothes and underwear for ladies, gentelmen, youth, kids and H&M cosmetics as well. Good choice of interesting, trendy, good quality clothes, various but fashionable in style (retro, say 20' of 20th century at spring 2004 collection). Urszula liked one jacket there a lot but... hmm... it was too expensive or maybe we had too few euros haha. Interesting and fashionable good quality clothes. Expensive or moderatately priced - depends on... where you are from maybe !
Bus and Tram (bus and streetcar)
by Bernhadette
In Berlin you can easily get around by public transportation, even by night. You have the choice between busses, streetcars ("Tram"), subway ("U-Bahn") and rapid city transport / urban rail system ("S-Bahn").
There are two main companies, that operate the public transportation in Berlin: the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe "BVG" (streetcars, busses, subway and some ferries) and the S-Bahn Berlin (S-Bahn).
Bus:
The bus routes are very dense all over Berlin. In the city center you can catch a bus about every 5 to 10 min. At night there are special routes ("Nachtbusnetz"), that cover all the important stops in Berlin. There is a bus about every 30 min.
Tram:
Streetcars just operate in the city center (Mitte) and some of the eastern quarters. Usually you can reach your destination by most bus routes. But if you are nostalgic, try the streetcar. It's worth it. If you want, you can also make an appointment to try out a streetcar simulator. But watch out, it's really expensive: 60 Euro for just half an hour!
