Hostel close to the airport

by bbynat

Making the trek from Vancouver to Berlin and was just wondering if anyone knows of a hostel close to the Berlin Shoenfield airport. Thinking that we will probably be very tired and want to crash right away. Thanx.

I can't recall of seeing any hostels listed in that area - hey it's Berlin, what hosteller would want to stay way out there? As you'll probably take the airport train link to the centre, the 'least travel' option is probably A+O Hostel am Zoo, right by Zoobahnhof. Note there are two other A+O hostels not so near stations.

There is no hostel close to Schönefeld Aiport. And even not many hotels.

Berlin Ostbahnhof is not far. With RE trains 17 min. Close to Ostbahnhof there e.g. the Pegasus Hostel
http://www.pegasushostel.de/en/

Single ticket is EUR 2,00 (to anywhere in Berlin).

Albergo Hotel is less than a mile from Schoenfeld Airport. The airport is close to the train station and we walked from the train station to Albergo Hotel. It's a nice hotel (4 star), but if you want to be close to the city center for most of your trip, it isn't an ideal location. But if you have an early flight leaving from Schoenfeld (as we did), then it's great.

A&O Hostel am Zoo. Just across the street from Zoo Station on subway. We stayed in the sister hotel A&O Hostel/Hotel Mitte during the World Cup. It was nice but not too close to nightlife. We mistakenly went to A&O Hostel am Zoo, they let us store our luggage in their luggage room so that we could make it on time to the game. Unfortunately, they were booked that particular night.

Here is their website if you want to find more information: http://www.aohostels.com/en/berlin-zoo/hostel/specials/

thank you that does look ok and has availability.

i also found this hotel which looks nice, and for a good rate online:
http://www.artotel.de/berlin_mitte/berlin.html

anyone have any information about that hotel, is it situated in a good location convenient for walking to places during the day?

PS: Hey John, just noticed your from Palatine, I'm from IL, too. I'm from Yorkville, just SW of Aurora/Naperville. I used to work over on Euclid by the racetrack. small world.

RE: RE: 1 night in Berlin

If you stay in the Mitte district, you couldn't be better situated to get around, and there will be plenty of sights and events within a reasonable walking distance of the Artotel

How-some-ever: Berlin is a massively sprawling city, so you shouldn't expect to be within convenient walking distance of *everything* you might be interested in seeing. The Berlin public transport system (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, Bus) is among the best in the world, though - fast, convenient and relatively cheap, esp. if you buy a day-pass. So, my advice would be to book into a hotel in Mitte, but also to plan to see some of Berlin's highlights (Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Museum Island, etc.) using public transport to get to those that aren't in Mitte.

My guess is that you'll see just enough in 1 day/night to make you eager to return to Berlin for a longer visit.

thank you Fritzrl, that sounds good, we have some flexability in our planning, we may stay 2 days before heading to london, if there is that much to see, and the hotel is as nice as it is supposed to be.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Traveling with kids

by matcrazy1

I was in Berlin or more exactly in former East Berlin together with my parents when I was 7 or 8 years old. Hmm... I remember only good ice-creams, Alexanderplatz with its modern that time architecture, large department store where my parent were doing shopping looking for goods unavailable in Poland that time and very high TV-tower which dominated city skyline (the Fernsehturm).

Avertisement, old car, my hometown...

by matcrazy1

Apart from a lot of typical adertisements put on walls of houses I found quite many cars with advertisements painted on their bodies and few ones with advertisements put on their roofs like this one on my picture.

Haha, this funny car was called Fiat 126, probably the smallest car ever produced in... my hometown, Tychy, Poland since 1972 until... 2000. It was my first, lovely car I would... not like to travel more :-).

The streets. get a train adn hop off on the other side of town to where you're staying and see if you notice a difference. West V's East is still alive and kicking and you can feel it in the people and see it in the buildings.
The East is being transformed though so this contrast will soon be gone :(

Wittenbergplatz U-Bahn stop

by dircelo

This is one of the most beautieful subway stations in Berlin. It is not only the stop to get of for the KaDeWe department store, but also inside reminds me of the atmosphere during the 1920ties and 30ties.
Read the book from Christopher Isherwood, his novel "Berlin Stories" gave the background for the movie "Cabaret".
When I stop at this station I am reminded somehow of this book.
Don't expect something too spectacular though.
