Flying in to Berlin-Tegel Sunday March 9th
by clervis
We will be coming in from Amsterdam Schiphol.
Should I expect to be stuck in Amsterdam?
Has anyone heard how bad(or good) things are going at Tegel?

So far there has been only a warning strike at some airports in Germany (but not Tegel) for a few hours on 5. March.
There is however a strike in Berlin against BVG (U-Bahn, buses and trams). The TXL bus which connects Tegel with the city does however run on a 20 minutes frequency (normal is 10 minutes).
Travel Tips for Berlin
Castle Bridge
by bugulma
Castle Bridge was built in 1821-1824 by plans of architect Schinkel. The bridge crosses Spree River and leads to the beginning of Unter den Linden Street. The bridge is very beautiful and interesting with sculptures. Besides you can enjoy wonderful views of Dom and TV Tower.
My biggest gripe!
by smirnofforiginal
I have repeated myself over and over again about how I cannot find anything wrong with Berlin..... and now I remember the biggest pain... very few places had information in English.
Checkpoint Charlie, the Jewish Museum and a few other places did but there were far more places where the information was in German only.
Le Corbusier House
by diocletianvs
Famous Swiss / French architect Le Corbusier designed several variations of "machines for living", many of them derived from his visionary Ville Contemporaine plans from the early 1920s. The most famous is certainly his Unite d'Habitation in Marseille which has a sister in western outskirts of Berlin, close to Olympia stadion.
Built for the 1957 Berlin Interbau exhibition here Le Corbusier was restricted by strict German standards and could not experiment with his minimalist dimensions which makes this Unite - Typ Berlin one of the best in its family when it comes to standard of living.
Colorful facade, almost perfect joints of concrede details, internal corridors and communal facilities are similar to other buildings Le Corbusier built after the WWII. Seventeen windowless internal streets accommodate 530 units and when I was there I was happy to discover that the front doors aren't locked making it possible to take a look inside and to take a fantastic view of Berlin from the top floor.
The Corbusierhaus is just south of the Olympia Stadion in the Westend section of Berlin. S-bahn S9, S75 to Olympiastadion or U2 to Olympia Stadion (Ost).
Earth Friendly Produkts
by JourneyOf1 about Naturkaufhaus Galleria
Galleria at SChlossstr. 101 It's the largest nature wear store in Berlin or so they say. Lots of earth friendly products from around the world. And some of my favorite teas: Ayurvedische Yogi-tees for around 2 per box. Genuine Alpaca fiber woven mittens, pullovers, toboggans and socks, prices for those are rather expensive because they are (of course) imported from Peru, but they are colorful and in demand by the grunge set. Natural hennas for hair can also be purchased here, just don't buy that horridly popular colors so many women are sporting: kind of a maroon color. If you are looking to buy someone a special gift, they have lots of unqiue items here. Some prices are reasonable, others are not, it just depends on how badly you want it.
Tempelhof **International** Airport
by Djinn76
I was flying from Brussels with SN Brussels airline. Our new 'national' company is now plain crap. I never had the chance to fly with Sabena (bitten, sucked and killed by these bloody Swiss vampires) but I suspect there was a world of differences!
Anyway whining is not the purpose of this post, the good thing about SN is that they have quite small aircraft in their fleet such as the 'silent' Avro RJ85. This particularity allows them to land in the Tempelhof airport, right in the center of the city!
At the same time, this provides a free trip back to the past to their passengers! I really had the feeling of arriving in a communist country 20 years ago... getting off the plane and simply walking to the gate (not even a bus!) was already quite amazing. Even if there is some more modern elements, the airport is so old, it's like arriving in a working museum!
This is quite a big place but only a few companies are still flying there so it is rather empty as well adding to the weird feeling...
...definitely worth the experience but better do it quickly, they are planning to close this airport!
