Reasonable priced nightlife

by clmbsb

Hi.

We will be visiting Berlin for my friends birthday and want to find some nice, reasonably priced bars/pubs to visit in the evening.

We do not mind a bit of a crowd but do not want bars that have banging music where you are unable to think, live music is ok as that does not last the whole evening. We mainly drink vodka/beer and with the £ being weak against the € we are looking for "cheap but cheerful". We do not mind having to walk/subway (we are staying between Brandenburger Gate & Potsdamer Platz)

Can you help?

Thanks

You could try Friedrichshain, around the Boxhagener Platz/Straße and the nearby Simon Dach Str (U-Bahn Warschauer Str). I've mainly been to a metal bar there (which, seeing as it is a rather loud establishment, I won't recommend you go to), but there are lots of pubs, clubs and cafes there, and it's not an expensive area.

Hope you have a good time in Berlin! :D

In the distrrict Kreuzberg the street Oranienstrassse (get there with underground line 1, stop Kottbusser Tor) or Bergmanstrasse (stop Mehringdamm) you find a lot of reasonably priced bars/pubs (and now my friend Turtleshell will recommend Prenzlauer Berg)

*Caugh* You called? ;D

It would be helpful to know what kind of music you like.
Relatively close to your accomodation, between Friedrichstrasse Station and Museums Island is a bar called Deponie (see tip). They have live music from time to time, but usually there is only the S-Bahn rumbling over your heads. A "pub" in the old sense of the word.

Deponie is situated in Mitte, not Prenzlauer Berg, but speaking of Prenzlauer Berg *caugh* a bit on the "hip-side", attracting more and more tourists after it was mentioned in an issue of "Lonley Planet" would be "Zu dir oder zu mir", Lychener St., (subway: U2 - Eberswalder St).
Very cosy is the nearby Wohnzimmer (6 Lettestrasse, subway: U2 - Eberswalder St). Both attract younger folks than Deponie.

But I'm absolutely certain: If you walk along Kastanienallee, Oderberger St, Lychener St, Helmholtzplatz and perhaps Kollwitzplatz (snob alarm!) and Rykestrasse, you'll find something that matches your ideas and purse.

At the same time, you can't go wrong with the suggestions above as well.

Some links:
Click yourself through Kulturbrauerei (same subway as mentioned above)

Helmholtzplatz: The bar shown at Lettest/Schliemannst is "Wohnzimmer" if memory serves.

On numerous trips to Berlin I have never found it too expensive...and I would always have been on a sparse budget! There are so many places to go out and have a good time and I would tend to agree with the comment above that the Prenzlauer Berg area and Oranienstrasse in Kreuzberg are two of the best bets in town! I found something intriguing about Kreuzberg and met much more of a local crowd there - a pleasant break away from the tourist trail...
Enjoy your time there, it's a great city!

Travel Tips for Berlin

Visit Check Point Charly. It...

Visit Check Point Charly. It was the control point in the Berlin Wall, between East and West. They have kept the panels and the miradors.
There is a small museum (with a narrow stair) which explains the different ways to leave the Berlin East Side. Pay attention at the car in the museum in the motor of which somebody was hidden to pass the Check Point.

National Library

by Audrey118

The National Library is where undesirable books were thrown out to be burned.

On the plaque bears the words of the poet Heinrich Heine from 1820 (who attended Humboldt University overlooking the square), "where books are burned, in the end people will burn".

Tagesbar 69 - If You Want A Proper Berlin Pub

by johngayton

This was one of those pubs that I just couldn't walk past even though I hadn't intended to have a beer. It was the ashtrays on the bar that caught my eye and an old guy at its corner enjoying his beer with a cigarette.

So I just had to pop in for a quick one.

This is my sort of pub - a simple one-room affair with bar stools around the horseshoe countertop, a couple of tables, indoors and on the pavement, and a small games area with a pool table and a big TV. The welcoming landlady fitted perfectly the stereotype of the buxom blonde hausefrau and whilst I didn't get involved in conversation I found the place friendly and comfortable.

So one beer became two (at less than 3 Euros each) and several cigarettes were smoked in similarly-minded company which made for a very pleasant afternoon chill-hour.

The bar is located at Warschauer Straße 69, just down the main road from Frankfurter Tor U-bahn. Not the sort of place for taking indoor pics on my first visit but maybe next time.

Berlin Nightlife Generally Speaking

by grishaV1

For general information about clubs and venues it's best if you are a visitor to the city or a resident even, pick up a copy of TIP or Zitty magazine at most any local store and the little kiosks in the bahnhofs. They are cheaper in the station kiosks than at a store like Kaiser's for example, though you can find one there.

Some online sites you might wish to check depending on what your looking for:

For both club and bars, general free-time things to do, restaurants, etc. check out Berlinfo.com or

Specific from gays and lesbians, a good site can be found at Gay Map of Berlin

Or maybe your search for more, so have a look at Europe For Visitors Berlin Page, it has more than just nightlife tips also, hotels, car rentals, etc also.....

There are so many choices for nightlife, each square or area has its bright spots, though away from a central location like Ku'damm for example, they will close earlier in general. At Ku'damm its a bright at night as by day, with just as many people it seems. If you need specific you are always welcome to ask me and I will try to help, but there are just so many clubs/bars in Berlin: The Green Door, Yosoyo, Delicious Doughnuts, The Kit Kat Klub....the list goes on and on.

For a racy, funny and informative website about bars-clubs-cafés etc in Berlin, check out The Hangover Guide To Berlin, if the link ever doesn´t work just type in www.hangoverguide.com and you will get the main page. Also a plus, this is an international website so you can find such information for any country around the world you are looking for by going to the main page.
