If you have never been in Berlin and do not speak German, you could do something like a multi-lingual sightseeing tour by bus, like the one here:

http://www.bbsberlin.de/sightseeing/index.htm
www.BVG.de/citytours

Another possibility is to travel on the public buses #100 and 200, they travel in loops past many attractions.

But if you have a good map you can do walking tours on your own, as so many attractions are at walking distance, for example this tour:

Brandenburg Gate - Reichstag - Potsdamer Platz/Sony Centre - Topography of Terror - Checkpoint Charlie - Gendarmenmarkt/German and French Dome.

Another good walk would be in the eastern part, from Alexanderplatz, to Red Town Hall and Nikolaiviertel, the birthplace of old Berlin, then get to Museumsinsel and Pergamon-Museum. And at some point you should make it to Kurfürstendamm, the centre of the west.

There are also guided walking tours, some even free of charge:

http://www.brewersberlintours.com/
http://www.insidertour.com/
http://www.berlinwalks.com/
http://www.newberlintours.com/nbt/ (free and in English)

More detailed info about these tours on my Berlin page (General tips).

It could also be fun to explore Berlin on a bicycle tour, see here:

www.berlinonbike.de
www.berlin.de/tourismus/infos/mobil/fahrrad.php (also bike taxis)
www.newberlintours.com (free walking and bicycle tours!!!)

More info on transportation and bicycle tours also on my Berlin page (transportation tips).

Finally: Consider a little cruise on the river Spree. This is close to the museums (Museumsinsel) and Berliner Dom, a really spectacular cathedral.

The best thing hand's down that I did in Berlin a few years ago was an English speaking "foot tour". It was only something like 10 Euro, but was a very full and busy day, so you need energy. Our guide took us all over on foot and I was amazed at everything we saw and things he pointed out that I never would have known. He told crazy stories of things that had happened in Berlin during the war, but also about the city's history and such as well. I feel like I saw and experienced so much of the city that day. His knowledge was profound. I wish I had a link but I know he was part of a company. This was such a good experience for me that it does down in my head as one of the best tours I've ever had/taken in any city.

Travel Tips for Berlin

visit the Checkpoint Charlie...

by go_doggo

visit the Checkpoint Charlie museum. The museum had a ton of information that included actual cars used for escape, photos and videos made at the time, and various other material pertaining to East/West Germany. There was so much information I was overwhelmed. I would put this at the top of my list of recommendations to others!

Victory Column (Siegessäule)

by Mandy23

It stood first in front of the Reichstag and in 1938 it was moved to the Großer Stern crossroads in the 'Tiergarten'. This was done by Albert Speer, an architect who worked for Hitler. The top of the Siegessäule has an observatory, offering great views on Berlin.

Address:
Straße des 17. Juni

Sachsenhausen Memorial

by marcelatimmins

I'ts a trip to dispair. You can see the quiet within the madness that a concentration camp used to be.
The place around looks so peaceful it's hard to believe the horrors that went on in there.
Take a box of kleenex if you are sentimental on the subject.

Prices

by smirnofforiginal about Souvenir Shops

Fistly, not all shops take visa - I was horrified when the Check Point Charlie Museum Shop wanted cash only - however - they did it me a favour because items were cheaper elsewhere.

eg fragments of the Berlin Wall are cheaper in the shops off Unten den Linden (by about 50%) than in the Check Point Charlie Museum Shop. Bits of the wall to buy - from little pieces stuck on magnets to large pieces that you wouldn't want to carry on the plane in your hand luggage!

t. shirts, bags etc... with the Check Point Charlie sign "you are now leaving..."

T.shirts, mugs etc. with the olde East Berlin pedestrian traffic light green & red men. Average children's t.shirt around 11,00EUR (give or take)
Berlin Wall around 3,00EUR fir a fridge magnet & then upwards in price according to size.
Totes shopping bags "BERLIN BERLIN BERLIN" 3,00EUR

Sitting Outside

by eliowny about Oranienburger Strasse

I really like Oranienburger Strasse. It's not chic, its not too expensive, and it's lined with prostitutes for that authentic Berlin feel.
Ok, so I'm not saying prostitution is a good thing, but it does make for some interesting people watching. Besides the fact that this street is lined with bars, restaurants (see restaurant reviews) and pubs, most of which have outside tables. And if you're hungry, there's lots and lots of imbisses. Try to avoid wearing skin tight jeans, mini corsets, low cut shirts, and thigh high boots unless you are looking for paying action.
(same goes for women)
