train question dresden - vienna

by nowingingit

I have another train question -
after dresden, we want to take a train to vienna. right now the fare i'm getting online is 221 euros for 3. just want to know if there is a cheaper way to do this - like buying the portion from dresden to ?? border town between Czech/Austria and buy another ticket for the portion within Austria. i checked bahn.de and there are some special tickets 57 Euro for 3 (but to prague only).
we are on a tight budget so if you have any suggestions, please let me know.
thanks.

You could buy these specials to Prague and normal tickets from Prague to Vienna (~ EUR 31 per person). You can buy them already at Dresden station from the counter.

Thanks. how about seat reservation? i think it's recommended but just wonder if it is really necessary.

Seat reservation is recommended.

A completely different option is bus. You could take the bus from Dresden to Vienna and pay only 45 Euro (max, other fares available) per person. The bus leaves Dresden Central Railway station 11.30 pm and arrives Vienna 6.30 am. Saves you an overnight.

If it's really necessary is difficult to answer in advance. Esp. without knowing the travel date and time.
With 3 you can buy a family seat reservation from Dresden to Vienna. EUR 8,00.
Seat reservations are totally independent from your train tickets. Apart from the fact that you'll need some ticket(s) covering the route when traveling.
You can make this reservation in Dresden or also any other staffed railway station before you'll arrive in Dresden.

Night bus. You only save on the overnight if you can sleep more or well in a bus. Otherwise you'll be totally knocked out on the rest of the arrival day.

sorry for not being clear. we will leave dresden on may 13, it's a Tuesday.

Re: train question dresden - vienna

No peak day. But if you want to be on the safe side that you can sit together you may consider to invest the EUR 8,00 for the seat reservation. Empty single places are much easier to find than 3 empty seats next to each other.
These trains, coming from Berlin, are however more busy between Berlin and Dresden than from Dresden to Prague.

thanks. another question:
when i tried to purchase the saver price ticket for Dresden - Prague there was a note saying that i can only purhcase tickets for myself, not for third parties. so if i'm buying 3 tickets for myself and my parents - is that allowed?

thanks again

> so if i'm buying 3 tickets for myself and my parents - is that allowed?
No. Buy you can buy 1 ticket for 3 persons. That's allowed because than you're part of this party. Thus no third party.

Very important: you have to bring the printout AND the credit card you used to pay for the ticket. Only in combination of both an Online-Ticket becomes valid (otherwise it would be too easy to make a false ticket using some software at home).

Travel Tips for Berlin

Portable bratwurst!

by nigelw6443

A funny sight that is becoming more common in Berlin is the one man Rostbrat vendor. They actaully walk around with a grill and cook the bratwursts whilst on the move. I haven't tasted one of these but they are a good alternative to standing at the imbiss.

El Oso de - Berlín - Bear

by elpariente

Bergmannstrasse Berlin Kreuzberg

by Karin1S

Take the Subway to Gneisenaustrasse or Platz der Luftbrücke and visit the famous Bergmannstrasse in Berlin Kreuzberg - you'll find the spirit of the "old" Berlin - a lot of students take theire breakfast at Atlantik or Pfau . . . a second hand shop or a crazy leather shop . . . a lot of snack-bars and don't miss the "Markthalle" at the end of the road - a lot of small stalls are in it with indian spices or turkish vegetabeles greek cheese . . . enjoy the spirit of Kreuzberg

Unique Souvenirs at Checkpoint Charlie

by Kakapo2 about Art Shop

Although many offers at Checkpoint Charlie are a tourist rip-off, like paying for photos with the actor-soldiers or for a stamp in your passport, I was impressed with the souvenirs in the shops there.

Whereas I think you would not really need a Russian soldier’s hat with the insignia at the front, the thick fur hats are of good use on a cold day. Also the t-shirts were reasonably priced, and I did not see them anywhere else in Berlin. You know, those t-shirts with the print that you are leaving the American sector, in English, German, Russian and French.

They also sell historic post-cards and photos.
