priceline hotel regions

by timewaster

I am going to make a bid for a hotel in Berlin.
It is divided into 4 areas.
Which should i choose for convenience and safety?
(i.e. close to the sights restaurants/night life etc.)
Which area is a better value in terms of price?

Schloss Charlottenburg –
Tiergarten - Kufuerstendamm
Kreuzberg
East

Schloss Charlottenburg + Tiergarten = sights
Kreuzberg = night life
East = that`s 50 % of Berlin, so yo don`t know, what this offer is about..
"safety" is the same in every big city in central Europe: don`t show strangers, how much money is in your wallet etc

very difficult for kreuzberg and "east"... kreuzberg could also be "sights" if it's kreuzberg northeast and east could be... well, everything :D
And Tiergarten divides in a touristy area and a poor residential area...

Hi,
Just came home this evening from Berlin, was 4 nights at the Holiday Inn Express Berlin City Centre West at Kurfürstenstrasse-(see:booking.com) not expensive : area Kurfürstendamm.
Nice, clean, friendly, new (built:2008).Easy to reach. When you arrive at station Zoologischer garten take bus 100(direction Alexanderplatz) till Schillstrasse(3th stop).Just cross the road and go back 50 meters.
Within 5 minutes you'll find an excellent fish restaurant(very good-cheap), an italian(expensive),a chinese and an indien restaurant,an Argentinian steak house, and a vegetarian restaurant. Its a very safe area.
Bus 100 (doubledecker)will take you to the most interesting places in Berlin between Kurfürstendamm and Alexanderplatz like: Gedächtniskirche, Siegesaule, Reichstag, Brandenburger Tor, Unter den Linden, Berliner Dom...There are many easy connections to other places (Schloss Charlottenburg,Rathaus Schöneberg,Kulturforum,Potzdammer Platz...)
I was not looking for nightlife, so I only recommend the hotel, the restaurants and bus nr. 100.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Still East versus West?

by johngayton

During the years of the divided city Alexanderplatz was rebuilt as a propogandic showcase of the triumph of the communist system. The immediate post-war buildings were "Socialist-Realist", including the now demolished People's Palace, and the square itself created as a public space.

1969 saw the construction of the imposing TV tower, the building of the World Clock and the installation of the Fountain of International Friendship all once again designed to give the proverbial "finger" to the decadent facists of the capitalist West.

It's ironic that the socialist square turned out to be a major contributor to its creator's downfall as it was here on November 4th 1989 that the first major permitted demonstration against the regime was held which was attended by up to 1 million people.

Following reunification and Berlin's return to its status as the German capital Alexanderplatz has been in the process of being redeveloped with the first thing to have been demolished being the People's Palace.

However not everyone's happy with the redevolpments. East Berlin architect Bruno Flierl hates them:

"This is, from the point of view of German unification, stupid and dangerous," he says. "It's occupation and not unification."

I kinda relate to his point.

Anyway this just really an excuse to use this pic which amused me.

Memorial Church / Gedaechtniskirche

by Mandy23

The church was built from 1891?95 but destroyed in 1943. Originally the ruins should be replaced by a new building but after protests they stayed and were integrated in the new building and now you have the contrast between history and the new modern building.
The entrance to the church is free and you can get there by using the subway U15 or U9. If you have enough time, you can also have a walk there from the train station Berlin Zoologischer Garten.

Maritime Museum Peenemunde

by PeterVancouver

Just 2 hours drive north of Berlin on the A20 autobahn on the island of Usedom, is the town of Peenemunde which was the center of the original V1 and V2 rockets during WWII.
Here can be found the Rocket Museum or Technical History Museum, from which area the V1 was launched and where Wernher von Braun helped to developed the V2 rocket. Both types of rocket are in the open air display.Alongside can be found the Martime Museum which is now home of submarine U461of the Juliett class built behind the Iron Curtain in the 60's

Shopping centers around the city

by Elena_blue

I found many shopping centers around the city, all of them tempting to buy buy things. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for my wallet?!) I was there during holidays and most days shops were closed.
However what I was looking for and could not find one, was a delicatessen store, where I could buy some genuine german products. You see, I love to taste local food. So If you have any advice on such places in Berlin, please let me know, for use on my next visit to the city!

happy hours!

by richiecdisc about Cayetano

This was a typical candlelit cafe in Friedrichshain, very smartly decorated with a warm oozing sensuality about it. They had an extensive cocktail menu, all for 4.50 Euros during happy hour as well as tasty snacks. Smart but casual attire looked to be the norm.
