I have stayed here the last couple of times I have been in Berlin and would go back again and again unless I fancied a change of scenery.
Ideally located, close to transport , shops and lots of restuarants but in a quiet, more 'local' area and away from tourists.
Once you find the Schall & Rauch restaurant they will give you the keys to your room/apartment within one of the resident (old) apartment blocks next door. Some of them have wonderful old features (check your ceiling - you may be lucky). All rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and quite modern although kept simple to offer sympathy to the aging buildings.
Breakfast is included - buffet and as much coffee as you can drink
There is a restaurant and the food is fine but there are plenty of other options along this (side) street.
For a double room it cost 83 Euros per night (including breakfast).
a note - my friend also had a double room booked but arrived on her own - She still got the double room but only charged for a single (nice touch).
Unique Quality: You feel more like a resident than a tourist!
Directions: IMPORTANT when you arrive S-Bahn "Schonhauser Allee" head left out the station on the OTHER side of the street to the shopping centre. Gleimstraße is a side turning to you right. There is a cinema on the corner. It is halfway down Gleimstraße.
