Best neighborhood to stay at in Berlin!

by trvlrgrl

Hey!

I'm heading to Berlin in a little over a week and I'm trying to figure out the best neighborhood to stay in that's close to the subway, sites, cafes, AND has very reasonable pensiones...Suggestions?

i´d recommend kreuzberg.
bohemian part of berlin with lot´s of good cafes and resonable prices.

claus is right, Kreuzberg could supply your requirements
there`s a lot of cheap hostels etc around, and you are in the center of Berlin

Thanks to both of you!

Not this fast, please. I'd bet, Blackbird is already waiting for my suggestion to stay in the Prenzlauer Berg Area, i.e. here:

Okay how are these neighborhoods different???

Near public transpo, charm, and cheap eats is high on my list!

I always say, would you turn Prenzlauer Berg into a car, you'd get an old Volvo or an Alfa. Kreuzberg would turn into a Volkswagen, perhaps a 1st generation Golf/Rabbit.

I hate advertising my own travel tips, but perhaps you volunteer finding my tips and brief historical abstract on Prenzlauer Berg.

Kreuzberg - generally speaking - is less gentrified more grungy, cheaper too, but lacks the somewhat mediterranean flair Prenzlberg has during summer (yeah, I know summer is over anyway).

I guess you should visit both boroughs if time permits.

If you plan on staying at the above mentioned pension: There are plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs around. If you rather want a cheap snack than a meal; Id suggest to go down Gleimst. (where the pension is situated) for 2 or three minutes. There's a Thai "Imbiss" called Pattaya.

S-Bahn (commuter train), subway and tram are all literally around the corner. Subway to Alexanderplatz takes 5-7 minutes. Not sure about the pension (it's cheap after all, and an Irish pal said it's nice there). But as far as the location is concerned, the area is hard to beat. I spent 8 years living in exactly the same street. ;-) Definitely explore the area: Kastanienalee, Oderberger St., Helmholtzplatz ...

Thanks again,

Sounds like a cool neighborhood...I already checked out that site and sent them an email inquiry so let's see what they say! Loved the clean lines and colors of the rooms.

Same area, less colorful street:

A 5*-hostel and a solid hotel in the Mitte area, bordering Prenzlauer Berg:

Amother nice hostel in Mitte, formerly part of the above mentioned The Circus:

- I would suggest you to buy a city night map. Otherwise you can not find the good clubs.
- My favorite place in sommer is Lustgarten and also Museum Island.
- There are many good cafes. One of them is ' Tadshikische Teestube Theaterrestaurant, Am Festungsgraben'
- Of course, Hackescher Markt and Kurfürstendamm
- If you would like to ask more, dont hesitate..

A historic moment

by sabsi

Standing on the wall in 1989 was a very special moment... (Apart from that I wonder how I got up there!!! Can't remember!!)

One week after the wall came down in that special night 9/10 November 1989 when 50% of all German citizens cried we went to Berlin to take our own pieces of the wall and to once in our lives stand on top of it. There was a hole in the wall at Brandenburg Gate with a improvised passport control, a lot people were walking around - from east or west, we walked around East Germany etc....an exciting day with a spooky atmosphere really!! I will never forget those days!

Underground: Berliner Unterwelten

by Pijlmans

The Berliner Unterwelten e.V. is an association for the exploration and documentation of subterranean architecture.

They offer underground tours through bunkers, shelters and unused parts of the subway.

Make sure to have a good look at the website to find the right tour in your language. Tickets should be bought before the tour starts, at the main office located in the southern entrance of the U8 Subway Station Gesundbrunnen. So be there well on time!

We did an interesting tour of 90 minutes for 9 euros.

See the website for more information.

Bahnhof Potsdamer Platz

by matcrazy1

The best visible building on the level of Potsadamer Platz was a square, glass and quite huge construction signed as Bahnhof Potsdamer Platz (train station Potsadamer Platz).
In real it was the entrance to huge underground city: S-bahn station which was connected underground with Potsdamer Platz Arkaden (shopping mall), Quarter Daimler-Chrysler and Sony Center. Watch carefully direction signs not to get lost there.

Nightlife in Berlin 2

by lashr1999

Our second night in Berlin, I paid the tour company to do a pub crawl. I felt they would know the spots to take us since they were doing this tour for so many years. Boy, was I wrong the bars they took us to sucked. People on our tour were commenting how the bars looked like someone’s grandfathers basement. However, we were given free shots in each bar. These shots together with the regular drinks we were having made the third bar seem better that the rest. In the morning, I found out the third bar was just as bad as the rest. To top it off it seemed like our tour filled up the bar, there were no other people entering these bars. However, all was not lost we were taken to the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg. This was the site of a former brewery. Now it holds a number of bars, clubs and live music areas. There was a lot to choose from just check out their website at www.kulturbrauerei-berlin.de/ .We went to the Alte Kantine club which played some rock and different types of music. I have to say I had a great time here drinking and dancing. There were people from all over. One of the funniest things that happened was when an older German grandfather type started dancing. My roommate started dancing and the older guy and my roommate started imitating each others moves. It was funny to watch the two. I am not sure how we made it back to the hotel but we did. I could not get up in the morning and missed part of the tour that was scheduled but that night was worth it.
