When I was in Berlin I took a tour with Berlin Walks. It's a historical tour and you will pass by the sites but not enter. But it does give you an idea of where to go for the sites and you can enter them on your own after the tour which is about 4 hrs long. They meet at 9am at the Zoo station in front of the Mcdonald's. The cost is about 6 euros for the tour and another 6 euros for the metro day pass.

Travel Tips for Berlin

The Soviet Embassy

by azz8206

The Soviet Embassy, today it is the Russian Embassy, is located on Unter Den Linden not far from the Brandenburg Tor. On top of the building sits the hammer and sickle with statues of a man and woman workers of the Soviet Union.

Sprechen Sie Englisch

by barryg23

It's quite helpful if you learn a few words of German before visiting Berlin. Most local people spoke some English though I always tried speaking to them in German first. The three most useful phrases I learned were:

1. Ich verstehe nicht
2. Sprechen Sie Englisch
3. Noch ein Bier bitte

Olympia stadion

by diocletianvs

The huge stadium was built for the 1936 Olympic games that became famous not for the sport results but for the Nazi doctrine that became more and more powerful. This massive neoclassical structure is one of the few remaining Nazi-era buildings in Berlin that is still in use. In its old days it saw masses saluting to Hitler and Jesse Owens winning four gold medals and today it is being prepared for the 2006 Football championships.

Unfortunately, preparations for the football finale include the installation of the fence around the stadium so it is no longer possible to walk inside freely. Still, even from the distance the Olympia Stadium remains impressive.

To reach take U2 to U-bahn stop Olympia Stadion (Ost) or S-bahn S5, S75 to Olympiastadion.

Secondhand is Great

by grishaV1 about Garbage and Humana

Secondhand shops are everywhere all over Berlin. You can find clothes, furniture, tools, shoes, household goods, whatever you might need. Usually they are just narrow shops with clothes hanging in the window maybe so you know what it is, some are more popular than other. My favorite is Garbage, its got good stuff. I look there regular because often you can find clothes for taller men. This we need. You can find it off Nollendorfplatz. Go to the right out of the station, about 2 blocks then left. Its a large square buildings not too high.

At Adenauerplatz you can see Humana secondhand. If you are riding the bus, as you cross the platz you can see it clearly as its on the square, or take the U-bahn 7 to Adenauerplatz. Some of the best second hand shops are in Kreuzburg, Schöneburg, and Pankow to me. I always looks for good jeans and dress shirts, sweaters and coats, some boots and belts. I wouldnt pay over 16.00 for a good coat, 6.00 for some jeans or trousers, 4 or 5.00 for a good sweater, and usually 2 or 3.00 for a dress shirt. If its a very unique thing I will pay what they ask the first time because someone else will get it otherwise. If its just so-so, I wait and come back when they regularly mark down the prices and try to get it then. After holidays and season end is good time.
