Really enjoyed staying at baxpax Kreuzberg. I heard they have a few other locations but decided to opt for their Kreuzberg location because I heard it is located a bit outside of the touristy area. Definitely glad I chose that- Kreuzberg is a very cool, artsy, hip area of Berlin and it definitely does not have a touristy feel to it. Great area for students and young people alike with lots of bars, cool clubs, etc. The hostel is also located right next to a great park. The hostel itself was great- very clean, uniquely designed rooms each with their own theme (I was in the UK room). Staff was very friendly, available 24/7 and knowledgeable about Berlin's nightlife, museums, sights, etc. Definitely would recommend this hostel to anyone wanting to experience Berlin and get to know an area that is a little bit more authentically Berlin but still easy to get to all of the major sights in Berlin.
Unique Quality: each room has its own theme, really cool designs, great location
Directions: Kreuzberg, Skalitzer Straße 104
I found this place to be very good. It is efectively a hostel, but calls itself a student art hotel. This is entirely justified as there seem to be a lot of students staying there on a semi-permanent basis.
It was actually recommended to me by a friend from Berlin, and it was definitely a good call.
The staff (24 hour coverage) are extremely helpful and very laid-back. It's sometimes difficult to tell who are the customers and who are the staff. Very nice atmosphere.
The rooms are clean (and cleaned every day) and warm, beds are comfortable, the cooking / eating area is adequate (I didn't use it much myself) and the reception / common area / bar is pleasant. It has music, TV and a pool table plus a really, really comfy sofa (be careful not to fall asleep in it).
Unique Quality: I would suggest I'm right in saying that it is the only hostel in the world with a VW Beetle as a bed! (see photo).
There are also a lot of other art pieces scattered about the place. This gives the entire hostel a nice ambience.
Directions: Directly opposite the entrance to Gorlitzer U-Bahnhof (station). Just cross the road and the entrance is through the gateway just beside the grocery shop.
