For anyone else thinking of doing the same as we did...here are 2 good options:

1/ Place an online classified ad in the local ex-pat magazine 'Ex-Berliner'.

2/ Walk into an Irish bar and asked behind the bar if anyone knows anyone who's up for renting you a room. We got lucky on our first attempt at doing this and ended up in a fab big flat 7 metro stops north of the centre for 100e a week.

Re The Generator Hostel - we went out here, but it was full of noisy wee 'pijos' and not cheap either - about 50€ a night for a private room.

BERLIN-SCHOENEFELD AIRPORT: Good Airport Hotel

We actually used this hotel at the last minute for our primary
property in berlin, due to last minute changes. The hotels we
were looking at in the city center were a bit out of budget or
below our expectations.
The staff was friendly enough. Room was fine, clean, roomy.
Didn't stay there too long, pretty much just to sleep.

This hotel is great if you're needing a hotel by the airport.
If you're staying in Berlin and have an early flight the next morning
for instance, you can take the airport express (RE7) that arrives from
the Hauptbahnhof in about 30 minutes.
The hotel offers a shuttle to/from either the train station or the airport.
If you buy a metro pass it includes the express train.
Nothing exciting near the hotel so plan for the hotel bar for nightlife.

Best Western Borsigturm: In a nice area outside the city center

Stayed here for a week while visiting a local factory for work. The hotel is about 2 years old and has a great free breakfast. It is right across the street from a large american-style shopping mall and a short walk to a fabulous park by the lake. There is also a subway station across the street, so you can easily travel to any other part of Berlin. The hotel has two computers to check e-mail in the lobby (amost always being used). The rooms were very spacious, modern, clean and comfortable. All and all, a good value.

Free admission to a health club in the Mall across the street. Great Free Breakfast, 10 minutes from Tegel Airport

hotel - pension eden am zoo: cheap and cheerful

friendly staff though didnt seem to speak english. generous buffett breakfast included in price (€50 per night) right on kurfurstendam almost! basic but worth the money. might be worth bringing a kettle as although we had a large fridge we couldnt have a cup of tea
