Friedrich's Roman Ruins by DrewV
The Enlightenment recalled much of the rational logic of the Classical Greeks and Romans; as a result, the ruins of those civilizations became highly prized and admired. Now, one might notice that Prussia had no classical ruins, but that did not deter King Fred. No, no. If ruins don?t exist for one?s viewing pleasure at the breakfast table, one need only build some. Therefore, outside Sans Souci?s back door, visible from the breakfast table, stand a set of magnificent, 100% fake Roman ruins. Nice. I wish I were the king of a major European power.
Here you see the fake ruins behind Marguerite (remember her?) and behind the back door of the Sans Souci. I can't decide if it's charming or ridiculous to construct your own fake Roman ruins. At any rate, it's certainly interesting.
