Travel Tips for Potsdam

Chinesische Haus

by bugulma

Chinese House is the example of the popular mode of Asian in European architecture. It was built by Johann Gottfrid Buering in 1754-1757 (although one of the guides says the works finished in 1764). The house was used for the sommer dinner. There are a lot of golden figure around, one of them is on the picture. To go inside is possible from May till October.

Lovely sculptures

by globetrott

There are plenty of lovely sculptures all over the castle-park of Sanssouci. Just click on my picture and take a closer look at this beautiful bench with a lovely eagle-decoration .
I took this picture at the big fountain, surrounded by lovely sculptures. On this picture you may as well see the terraces of artificial vinyards that Friedrich made a part of the whole architecture.
I am not sure whether this wine is any good for drinking - the grapes that I saw there in august were so tiny, that I cannot believe that the vinyard is anything else than just a historic decoration.

Schloss Sanssouci

by margaretvn

Park Sanssouci is a large park and it is a lovely palace complex, we were there during a bitterly cold day, but warmly wrapped up we explored the complex. The first building was Schloss Sansouci (1747) was the summer palace for Frederick the Great. It was built on the site of an orchard. The palace is Rococo and was built by Knobelsdorff and Johann A. Nahl designed the interior. Sanssouci means "carefree".

Steam House

by alexberlin

By order of Frederick William IV, Ludwig Persius built a steam engine-house disguised as a mosque on the Neustädter Havelbucht (a bay on the Havel lake) between 1841 and 1843. This finally made it possible to execute the plan made a hundred years earlier to install fountains in Sanssouci Park.

Statues in san Souci Gardens

by mallyak

Statues such as these were located to the sides of the main garden in the previous photo. Clearly the center column once held a statue of some important figure. These decorative monuments marked pathways through the trees to other parts of the palace grounds, primarily those that led to another major structure
