things to do and parking

by mjfeaster

Hi,
We will be there for one day only. Any suggestions on what to do? Also, we will have our own car...how is the public parking?
Thanks!

It has to be Sanssouci Royal Park. I know that there is parking for cars at the New Palace end of the park because I have parked there. Not sure about other entrances into the park for parking, but would guess given the size of the park there other places to park.

Sanssouci and the Dutch Quarter.

Alternatively do the walk I have described here:

I forgot: As for parking areas, there's a larger one at Central Station, you could also park your car at Griebnitzsee S-Bahn station and later take the S-Bahn from Potsdam back to Griebnitzsee.

Overall it's not that hard to find a parking lot.

Travel Tips for Potsdam

Chinesisches Haus

by DEBBBEDB

The Chinese House is a garden pavilion in Sanssouci Park in Potsdam. As I noted in my letter to my mother, Frederick the Great had it built, about seven hundred meters southwest of the Sanssouci Summer Palace, to adorn his flower and vegetable garden. The garden architect was Johnn Gottfried Büring, who between 1755 and 1764 designed the pavilion in the then-popular style of Chinoiserie, a mixture of ornamental rococo elements and parts of Oriental architecture. Two of my three pictures of the gardens are of the Chinese musicians that stand around the edge of the building.

Helpful signs!

Don't worry if you get lost in Potsdam - there is always a statue willing to point you in the right direction! This guy can be found in the gardens of the Orangerie and he is pointing in the direction of the Neues Palace.

Views of the Havel

by barryg23

Just a short distance outside Potsdam (though it didn't feel it after walking there in 30 degree heat), there are great views of the Havel, and it feels like you are deep in the countryside, not just on the outskirts of Potsdam & Berlin.

Sanssouci palace

by magor65

The one-storey palace is relatively small but it's beautifully decorated in roccoco style. I think that without a terraced vineyard below it wouldn't be very special, but together they look incredibly picturesque. The impression is still enhanced by the hedges, steps, fish ponds and white statues.

Frederic II wanted to be buried on Sanssouci terrace, but his nephew decided otherwise. Only in 1991 Frederick's remains were brought back to Potsdam and buried in Sanssouci according to his wish. He lies next to his beloved greyhounds.

There is no doubt that it is interesting to enter the palace but we had a very packed programme for that day so we didn't get inside.
The entrance ticket is 9 Euro.

Chinese Teahouse

by magor65

This oriental style teahouse built in 1754-1756 is an example of fascination with Cinese culture. The golden decorations simply dazzle you on a sunny day - during the renovation of the teahouse two kilograms of golden flakes were used to get this effect.
Inside visitors can see the collection of Chinese and Meissen porcelain.
You have to buy a ticket to enter.
