Sanssouci Park
by bugulma
There is wonderful park around castles besides. I'm really fan of parks and gardens. When I came first day here, Sanssouci was closed and I enjoyed park during 3 hours I think :-) Next day was snowing and the park looks absolutely in other way. Some pics you can see in my travelogue. Besides there are some wonderful statues in the park.

Stadtschloss

This old palace has managed to survive much, such as wars, neglect, etc... However, some of the buildings around it didn't and you can see a Soviet era (ugly) building next to it, ruining its looks....
Friedrich's Roman Ruins
by DrewV
The Enlightenment recalled much of the rational logic of the Classical Greeks and Romans; as a result, the ruins of those civilizations became highly prized and admired. Now, one might notice that Prussia had no classical ruins, but that did not deter King Fred. No, no. If ruins don’t exist for one’s viewing pleasure at the breakfast table, one need only build some. Therefore, outside Sans Souci’s back door, visible from the breakfast table, stand a set of magnificent, 100% fake Roman ruins. Nice. I wish I were the king of a major European power.
Here you see the fake ruins behind Marguerite (remember her?) and behind the back door of the Sans Souci. I can't decide if it's charming or ridiculous to construct your own fake Roman ruins. At any rate, it's certainly interesting.

The Sans Souci park is simply impossible to loose. You should consider to take enough time to walk arund in the huge park, resting under the old trees and sitting on the benches while pepole go back and forth.
