Staudengarten
by ettiewyn
The Staudengarten (Perennial Garden) is located right next to the Stiftsruine. It was created by Prince Moritz of Hessen-Kassel as a garden in baroque style, but restaurated in 2006 as a new garden with perennials. An old forester's house is now integrated, as well as the walls and trees of the former baroque garden. It is not big, but I found it very pretty.
This is a very nice place to relax from your exploring of Bad Hersfeld!
Küsterhaus - oldest framework house of town
by ettiewyn
The Küsterhaus was built in 1452 and is the oldest framework house of Bad Hersfeld. Küsterhaus means "verger's house". The house is not very big, but the frameworks are beautiful. I think most people do not notice it as it is so small and kind of hidden in the corner around the church. So when you visit the Stadtkirche, do not forget to walk around and look out for the Küsterhaus.
Kurhaus (Spa House)
by ettiewyn
The spa house is located within the Kurpark (health garden). It is a nice building, and you can have a drink of the medicinal spring water inside. The spring is the Lullus and Vitalis Spring and it is because of that water that the town of Hersfeld received the status as a spa town in 1949 and is hence called "Bad". You see, a "Bad" is not at all something bad in Germany!
There are also concerts held inside the house. When I went there, there was a wonderful chamber concert, and as it was summer all the windows were open, so I sat outside the house on a bench and listened to the music while enjoying the sun and looking at the flowers of the park... A beautiful memory!
Beautiful Bad Hersfeld

"A visit to Hessen"
I had never heard of the town of Bad Hersfeld, until I was invited to an event taking place there. After doing a bit of research I was sure I wanted to go, not only because of the event, but to visit the town, as it seemed to be very nice.
And so it was! I had a fabulous meeting of the German Tolkien Society, with great music, lectures, discussions and food, but also had the time to explore Bad Hersfeld in depth and discover its sights.
Bad Hersfeld is probably most famous for its opera festival taking place every summer, because of this the town is called "The Hessian Salzburg" (referring to Salzburg in Austria with its famous opera and theatre festival). I did not see an opera, but strolling around the Stiftskirche I could hear the rehearsel of The Magic Flute - magnificent!
It is a spa town with an interesting and beautiful garden - so you can even do something for your health.
Bad Hersfeld is also important because two famous Germans were living and working here: Konrad Duden, who developed a dictionary of the German language that became the binding rule for Germany, Austria and Switzerland and still (in its later editions) is today, and Konrad Zuse, who invented the first fully automatic and freely programmed computer of the world (Z3).
But this is not all that one can discover in Bad Hersfeld: With its many framework houses, beautiful gardens and interesting history, it hides many treasures!
