Hölderlin Path at the U2 near Kalbach

4. These signs mean: no entry for vehicles other than farm vehicles and bicycles. And of course the fourth sign is for the Hölderlin Path.

After leaving the Old Airfield, the Hölderlin Path skirts the Frankfurt district of Kalbach, following the brook of the same name, and crosses the tracks of the U2 subway line near Kalbach station.

This line operated for many years as a tram line, before being changed into a (somewhat faster) subway line in 1971. As a tram line it went all the way to the Bad Homburg railroad station, but now it ends in Gonzenheim at the edge of Bad Homburg, so you have to change to a bus from there.

Hölderlin Path at the Hölderlin House

2. Another view of the Hölderlin House.
3. Plaque reading: "Hölderlin House built again in 1986. Here the poet Friedrich Hölderlin lived from 1804-1805."

This "Hölderlin House" is a block and a half from the end of the Hölderlin Path.

During his second stay in Bad Homburg, Hölderlin rented a room in this house for several months from a clock- and watchmaker named Calame.

The house was completely demolished in 1983, but it was rebuilt from scratch in 1986, so what we can see now is actually a replica, not the original house. It is now used as a residence for visiting literary scholars.

Kaiser Wilhelms Bad

by Nemorino

This luxurious bath-house was named after the German emperor Wilhelm II, who used Bad Homburg as his summer residence starting in 1888.

Today this bath-house is still (or again) thriving under the name of "Kur-Royal®" -- that last character in the quotation marks is the trademark symbol (R in a circle). I don't know if it will show up properly in VirtualTourist, but even if it doesn't, you know what it means.

Bad Homburg vor der Höhe

"A Lovely City at the Outskirts of Frankfurt/Main"

This lovely City is approx. 1000 years old according to the frist documents that were found.

Obviously the castle is still one of the evidences. In the vicinity of the castle excavations revelead settlements dating back to 11th and 12th century. Lots of ceramics were found.

The development as a "Spa"-City took place only in the 19th century and the a casino was opened already. Even the Tzars of Russia came to frequent the city for the spa.

Personally I like the city as a concention place for our corporate affairs. It is very easily accessible and also close to Frankfurt/Main airport. The hotels are in abundance and all with excellent service.

"The Castle"

The castle and the "White Tower" became a landmark of Bad Homburg.

"Recreation for the Tzars from Russia"

When visitng Bad Homburg in 1899 the Russian Tsar and his wife inaugurated the Russian Chapel, which is still one of the attractions in the park of the spa in Bad Homburg
