A Romantic Place for a Wedding
by scottishvisitor
Although we didn't come here for a Wedding, many couples have tied the knot here in Darmstadt's beautiful Wedding Tower in a civil ceremony since 1993. We only just made it into the Wedding Tower because it was closing soon. I'm so glad we did, the two mosiacs in the entrance hall really are a must see, designed by Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukers, they sybolise the meaning of the Wedding Tower with romance, faithfulness and of course happiness. The tower has seven storeys, take the lift to the last one, this is the viewing platform, from here the city of Darmstadt streaches out before you. We took the stairs down but I can't remember for the life of me why, it was so dark & my eyes were having great trouble adjusting to the non exsisting light conditions = thank you Ingrid for providing me with the little light and opening my eyes to this beautiful place.
Art Nouveau House - Moosbergstrasse
by Trekki
Als already mentioned in the to-do section, Darmstadt was famous for Art Nouveau development end of 19th century. Mathildenhöhe is the most famous part of town for this architecture. However, also in Bessungen, the old district south of the city centre, some superb buildings can be found. It simply needs some walk away from the main streets and a strong will to "get lost in Bessungen" :-) I did it on a beautiful crisp and cold sunny winter day some time ago.
Oh my, I was really surprised to find some real gems of our town..... :-)
This specific building, for those who want to see it in reality and not only on the photos, is in Moosbergstrasse No. 60, which is a left turn from Heidelberger Landstrasse, when heading south (see Google Map screenshot).
It is said to be the only fully preserved Art Nouveau façade in Darmstadt, built in 1905. Look at this exquisite artwork details ! The roses at the lintel for example (main photo), or the peacocks.
Well, and a special thanks to my digicam for being able to zoom in so nicely (and me for standing still when pressing the button, haha).

Bavarian Beergarden atmosphere
by Trekki about Bayrischer Biergarten
We have several beergardens in town but the best is without doubt the Bavarian Biergarten in the northeast of the city. On a huge areal they have space for approximately 1300 seatings (that’s what the website says) and I can confirm that I always found a place to squeeze in, even if it is crowded. Well, in warm weather it is always crowded. During the week it is the meeting place for a lot of business people who gather up here with friends and colleagues after work. During weekends, families come in herds with their kids and bikers stop here to fill up their stomaches. It is a very much popular place – for many reasons.
The food is excellent, yes, and it is even true Bavarian. The beer garden has 3 sections with different food and service.
First there is the restaurant inside with seatings for around 60 people. Here the dishes are served a la carte and emphasis is given to game dishes.
Outside is a fenced section (near the entrance to the restaurant) where also a la carte dishes are served. And the majority of the space is for the beer garden itself, self service and a reduced selection of food. But this does not at all take the fun away, as these dishes are typical Bavarian ones like potato and cabbage salad or sauerkraut (2,40 € each), Bavarian Weißwurst (“white” sausage, served boiled, two for 4,50 €), Leberkäs’ with mustard (4,50 €) and Schweinsbraten with dumplings (roast pork, 850 €) and much more. The outside works as follows: first go to the drinking counter (on the left side), order your drinks or beer, pay and pick up your beverages. Then go to the food counter (right side), order your selection and pay. You will get your dishes mostly immediately. If you have to wait, they usually bring it to your table. Haha, good question. What is my favourite dish? This depends on my mood and why I am there. If it is one of the after work gatherings, I mostly have some small dish like the Obatzter and beer of course. If I am here for pure gourmet reasons, I would prefer one of the game dishes or in autumn one of the mushroom dishes (as in the main photo).
Opening hours:
during the week daily 11:30 to 14.00 and 17.00 to midnight and from 11:30 to midnight on weekends;
during Mai to September daily from 11:00 to 23.00.

Ernst Ludwig House at Mathildenhöhe
by robertbaum
The Ernst Ludwig House was built in 1900 as a common atelier for the artists' colony at Mathildenhöhe following plans drawn up by the Austrian architect Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908). The atelier was both a worksite and the venue for gatherings in the artists’ colony.
The entrance is located in a niche that is decorated with gold-plated flower motifs. Two six-metre tall statues, “Man and Woman” or “Adam and Eve” or “Strength and Beauty”, flank the entrance and are the work of Ludwig Habich. The artists’ houses were grouped around the atelier.
Today the building houses a museum about the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony.
Opening hours:
Tuesday - Sunday 10:00 - 17:00
Closed on Monday
