Travel Tips for Darmstadt

Darmstadt - in general

by tessy

Darmstadt is a town with about 130 000 inhabitants in the south of the county Hessen. It is the 4th biggest town of Hessen. Darmstadt is well known because of Art Nouveau at Mathildenhoehe.

But it is as well a centre for sciences. There are more than 30000 students studying especially technics there.

At the begining of the Odenwald Mountains

by poniente

lies Burg Frankenstein. Click on the photos to read the history. This place is about a 20 minute drive from downtown Darmstadt. besides being historical it is ideal for nature hikes. On Sundays the restaurant has a great buffet. The $20.00 price tag which includes a most marvellous view is well worth it.

Cocktails - all you can imagine :-)

by Trekki about Cubana

Well, originally, Cubana was on my list to write about as excellent Mexican food, burrito style like. But… I just was there again in summer 2006, as I liked the food and I was badly disappointed. They must have changed the cook or the directives of ingredients or what so ever, the Rellenos (as they call the Burrito style food) were not as good as they used to be – more of a kind of “plastic food” (my description for ingredients, which come from cans rather than freshly made).

My photos are from Feb 2006, when I liked the food.

The interior is nice, a bit overdone, but fits to the Latin colourful world. A bit can be seen on their website, which does not show menus, but panorama pictures (look for the virtual tour).

Since recently, they also have tables and seats in the patio, where it is even a bit more quiet than inside.
It is still a good place to get some cocktails, they serve all kinds of cocktails, have around 30 different ones on their menu. Also, they have a big selection of rum, and offer all possible rum cocktails as well. As the name tells, Cuban and other typical Latin American drinks as well. Mojito is good, Pisco is not as good as I used to have it in Chile.

Of course, beer as well, draft and bottles, Corona is not missed :-)

Food selection: the mentioned Rellenos, but well, on this day in June, both we had were not good. They also have pizzas, several pastas and a big selection of tapas. All comes with salad, as seen on the pics.

Prices are about average for Darmstadt. Rellenos e.g. are 5-8 Euros. Cocktails, depending of the ingredients, from 6 Euro up to 9 Euro.
The prices are of summer 2006, and I haven’t been there since.

Wedding Tower...

by roessling

Wedding Tower ('Hochzeitsturm') with Wedding Chambers
Built in the early 1900s for the wedding of the local duke, it is built like
a hand (and thus also called 'Five Finger Tower'). You should pay a
small fee to see the very splendid wedding chambers - Art Noveau style.
Weddings actually still take place in here, but have to be booked well
in advance!

Residenzschloss

by antistar

The jumble of buildings of different styles that make up the extensive palace of Darmstadt were built up over a period of 700 years, only to be reduced to ruins by Allied bombing during the war. The buildings have been carefully reconstructed, and while looknig a bit grubby and graffiti daubed, they still retain much of the grandeur that they would once have. The buildings contain a musuem, in the bell tower, a Renaissance Altschloss that is now a university, and a Baroque Neuschloss that houses the city's library and town archive.
