We spent two nights in Frankfurt at the Ibis Frankfurt Centrum (there are a couple of Ibis Hotels in Frankfurt). The hotel was in a great location for us - about 500 metres from the main train station, and right by the river.

We have stayed at Ibis a few times before around Europe, and look at it as a safe and (normally) cheapish option if I can't find something else affordable. This trip we were more or less forced to stay here, as we visited Frankfurt during the huge annual Motor Show, and when I booked much of the accommodation in our budget was already booked, or ridiculously more expensive than usual. That said, the Ibis was also ridiculously more expensive than usual during our stay.

The hotel was much as expected, with the usual Ibis décor and standard of room. I did take a liking to the carpet in the common areas though, and took a photo which I use as my computer background ; )

We found the service to be friendly and helpful, and the breakfast buffet was better than the average for a 2 star hotel.

Accomodation during the Frankfurt Book Fair

Finding accomodation in Frankfurt during the Book Fair in October is no problem if you follow these two simple rules:

    1. Book at least a year in advance.
    2. Be prepared to pay through the nose.

For those who for some reason choose to disregard these two rules, the Trade Fair has a website which might be able to help. (See link below.)

Also you might consider booking a cabin on a cruise ship anchored in the Main River. They don't cruise anywhere during the fair, just stay at a dock in Frankfurt to provide accommodation which I'm told is comfortable and costs about one-third less than a hotel room. http://www.crossgates.co.uk/.<br />
Another solution is to book a room in some neighboring city and commute daily into Frankfurt by train. I know several people who have done this, staying in places like Mannheim, Hattersheim, Mainz, Wiesbaden or Darmstadt. One of them told me his hotel room in Mainz plus train ticket was less that he would have had to pay in Frankfurt for a hotel room alone, assuming he could have found one.

In 2003 the Book Fair threatened to pack up and move to Munich if the Frankfurt hotels didn’t lower their prices. They reached an agreement to this effect with the Frankfurt Hotel and Catering Association. Unfortunately this association can only make recommendations to its members, not issue orders, so it remains to be seen whether the hotels will actually adhere to the agreement.

    Update on Sept. 29, 2004:

Today’s Frankfurter Rundschau has an article on hotel prices during the book fair, saying the situation is at least as bad as last year. They say the Maritim Hotel charges EUR 645 for a single room during the book fair and EUR 125 for the same room afterwards. The Inter-Continental charges EUR 642 during and 194 afterwards. Etcetera.

The paper’s explanation for this is that there are actually TOO MANY hotels in Frankfurt. Especially the luxury hotels have low occupancy rates most of the time, so they seize on the book fair as a time to make up for their losses during the rest of the year.

The article also warns against “dubious” internet sites asking up to EUR 645 for a single room without breakfast, in hotels that cost a lot less when you book direct. But it recommends the website I have listed below.

We stayed in a double room for 59 Euro. Breakfast costs an extra 9.50 Euro per person. The room was small but functional and very clean with TV, desk, bench, clothes hanging garderobe, second duvet, shower, toilet. We had a non-smoking room. Window can be opened.

Walls to the corridor are a bit thin and also the elevator could be heard all the time which was waking me up at 6 am, but this depends on where your room is located.

    I would stay there again.

The German Youth Hostel - Haus der Jugend: Frankfurt's Favourite Budget Address

  • Youth Hostel in Frankfurt - Frankfurt am Main
    Youth Hostel in Frankfurt
    by Weissdorn
I must say that the rules and the quality of this youth hostel have changed since I stayed in in 25 years ago. For one thing it's more secure, but not as secure as a regular hotel. Still, you can beat the price - 20 -25 Euro per person, including breakfast. The rooms have between 4 and 12 beds, and if you are there with just a friend, your luggage cannot be guaranteed to be protected from theft, so don't leave anything valuable in your room.

If you haven't made reservations, you probably can't stay here in the summer.

One thing you can't beat is the view, if you get a room on the river side. Still, this place still has group showers without like in the high school gym, and stall toilet rooms. They have only been able to partially modernize some rooms for adult travellers. The breakfast you get here isn't the same quality you could get at a corner cafe, so you might want to skip it.
Normally YOU CANNOT STAY HERE WITHOUT AN IYC MEMBERSHIP CARD!
Irritating is the fact that the City of Frankfurt, often forces the Haus of Jugend to accept street kids for a night or two, instead of putting them in a juvenile delinquency center, which sort of downplays the security factor. Hostels are generally better outside of big German cities, so it's really better to stay in a small hotel.

  • Nice accomodations if you want a day-use hotel... if you plan to spend much of your day-time at Frankfurt downtown, you will only use the hotel for resting between flights... as it was my case.

The well known hotel chain speaks for itself.

    The room - Intercity Hotel
    Frankfurt

I happened to stay here while attending a special event and it was one of the 3 suggestions where rooms were held for us. Usually, when on business trips, I really don’t mind the size of a hotel room or the amenities, as I only sleep there. But I like a good bed (and not something that breaks your back with being too soft) and a shower where the water comes out in streams rather than dripping. Oh, and I like if it serves a good coffee and has at least a fairly good choice at breakfast.

So how would I describe and “rate” the Intercity Hotel ? It is a lovely hotel, very much close to Frankfurt’s main train station (100 m across the street through the station’s northern gate), the reception personnel is nice and helpful and the room was of sufficient size with a nice bathroom.
What I really liked with this hotel was that it wasn’t noisy at all, as I would have expected due to its vicinity to Germany’s largest train station. Maybe this is as Frankfurt’s station is a terminus, so the trains are fairly slow (and less noisy) when they arrive and leave in only one direction (west). I didn’t hear any train at all, despite having my window open all night.
The bathroom was nice, with all you might need (hairdresser, soap and shampoo and more upon request), and one thing (even if it might sound strange) I also liked: the toilet paper is in front of you when you sit down, and not hidden somewhere where you need to be an acrobat to grab for it, haha.

Breakfast was more than enough with plentiful choices of bread, cold cuts, cheese, fruit and English style options (ham and sausages, eggs and all). Coffee was illimited, orange and tomato juice available and several varieties of tea (bags) as well.

Room rates were 97 € per night for single occupancy, including breakfast (as of end November 2007).
Oh, and the room includes a public transport ticket for taking busses and metros in the city centre during the length of stay. And on one of the floors there must be a fitness studio, but I didn’t use it.
Intercity Hotel belongs to Steigenberger group.

  • A three star hotel in the heart of one of Europe's most important cities in a beautiful and relaxed neighbourhood for less than 40 euros? You'd think it was impossible, but Frankfurt's hotels are currently extremely good value, and the centrally located Royal must be one of the best value in the city. It's located just on the opposite banks of the river, a bridge crossing from the city center, in possibly Frankfurt's most exclusive suburb of Sachsenhausen. It's right by the museum strip, and is run by incredibly friendly and helpful staff who all spoke fluent English.

The Royal is conveniently close to Frankfurt's southern station (Frankfurt Süd). This station takes many trains, including ICEs from the airport, and is much more pleasant than the main hauptbahnhof in the center. From Frankfurt Süd you can walk through the leafy Sachsenhausen suburbs, up Bruckenstrasse, through the small park, and then take a right onto Wallstrasse, where the hotel is just there on your right.

The hotel also has Wireless LAN access. Although it isn't free it's still better value than that rip-off T-Online access you get in many German hotels. It cost 3 euros an hour, but they gave me a discount for booking a 3 hour block for just 7 euros.

Stay & Learn Hostel in Frankfurt: Can you find the hostel in this picture?

  • Can you spot the hostel in this picture? - Frankfurt am Main
Can you spot the hostel in
    this picture?
    by Weissdorn
Ryan Air is offering a new service called Book A Hostel. Interesting that they have no pictures of their hostels, and hence everyone is dying to know what they're like. I didn't stay here, but I did go there to find out, since it was on the way home.
Squished between Max & Moritz's Chicken Farm and the World of Sex, you will find the Stay and Learn Center for Languages. The primary function of this hotel is to help provide students learning German an affordable place to stay while practicing the language. Earning money through Ryan Air is according their sources a side-line business.
Because it's in downtown Frankfurt, the price of a single room, all by yourself is slightly lower than average, when you consider that you are most likely not working in the horizontally positioned business, which is just around the corner.
This end of town does not have the best reputation, because of drug addicts (although the problem has been drastically reduced, ever since they opened up a junkie center, where junkie can received monitored and controlled amounts of drugs for free – a sort of Salvation Army center for junkies). Being robbed is rather unlikely, since they have gun control in Germany, and rape is extremely rare. On the other hand, sexual harassment is not unusual, due to the businesses being conducted around the corner.

The hostel uses a credit-card lock system to give you access to the building and your room. The entrance, hallways and corridors have camera surviellance. The police usually have a squad car on permanent patrol at this end of the Kaiserstrasse. In other words, it is all right, if you don't mind staying in the semi-sleazy part of town. The theft risk here is practically the same as any other hotel in Frankfurt. The only thing that is really disturbing is the atmosphere.
The cheapest rooms, are the ones that you have to share with 7 other people of the same sex (only 22.23 Euro). The most expensive rooms are private single/double bed rooms for 40.00 / 60.00 Euro. In contrast to Youth Hostels, you don't have to bring your own sheets or become a member, they don't have bunk beds, and all of the rooms have their own showers. Other advantages include satellite television in the rooms, they accept small children, there is no curfew or lock-outs, and they have a kitchen where you cook for yourself. Breakfast is optional (not included in the price) and they have 28 PCs so you can write you brand new VT travel tips about Frankfurt / Germany.
The big advantage of this hostel, is that is literally across the street from the Frankfurt Main Train Station, which has S-Bahns running directly to the Frankfurt International Airport or Shuttles to the Hahn Airport (Ryan Air).
