Hotel Royal - Sachsenhausen

The Hotel Royal is a comfortable hotel on the edge of Alte Sachsenhausen south of the Main River. Each room here has private bathrooms, telephones, TVs, and safes. The hotel is about 6 stories tall and has a good elevator.

When we arrived in February during the off season, we asked how much a room was and we were told 75 Euro for a double. After indicating this was a little more than we were prepared to spend, the proprietor quickly offered us a room for 65 Euro minus the continental breakfast. That was a little more to our liking, so we spent a night here.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the bars and restaurants of Alte Sachsenhausen, but there are numerous restaurants just outside the door on Wallstrasse. The U-Bahn station at Schweizerplatz is also about 10-15 minutes away.

Royal

A three star hotel in the heart of one of Europe's most important cities in a beautiful and relaxed neighbourhood for less than 40 euros? You'd think it was impossible, but Frankfurt's hotels are currently extremely good value, and the centrally located Royal must be one of the best value in the city. It's located just on the opposite banks of the river, a bridge crossing from the city center, in possibly Frankfurt's most exclusive suburb of Sachsenhausen. It's right by the museum strip, and is run by incredibly friendly and helpful staff who all spoke fluent English.

The Royal is conveniently close to Frankfurt's southern station (Frankfurt Süd). This station takes many trains, including ICEs from the airport, and is much more pleasant than the main hauptbahnhof in the center. From Frankfurt Süd you can walk through the leafy Sachsenhausen suburbs, up Bruckenstrasse, through the small park, and then take a right onto Wallstrasse, where the hotel is just there on your right.

The hotel also has Wireless LAN access. Although it isn't free it's still better value than that rip-off T-Online access you get in many German hotels. It cost 3 euros an hour, but they gave me a discount for booking a 3 hour block for just 7 euros.
