trapped in Frankfurt by volcano

by PhillyJohn

Hi,

any other vt'ers here in Frankfurt, especially U S members? Just wanted to get out the word we are here. Also,

any local Frankfurt VT members, give us some advice on how to get home. We have already seen enough of this wonderful city, but we want to go home.

Depending what airline you are using.
For instance Aeroflot flies the polar route and you can get Kiev-NYC tickets.
I think, same would apply to Aerosvit.

Getting to Kiev is pretty straightforward - but you should ask Aerosvit or Aeroflot about their legs to NYC.

Budapest is open at this moment, so if you have a trouble to get a Russian transit visa you could fly Budapest-Moscow-NYC by Aeroflot and transit in Moscow without visa.

There is a Moscow-Houston flight from 826 Euro by Singapore Air, but that flight is from Domodedovo and you will need a transfer ( = transit visa). It is rather untypical for Russian consulate to give visa outside of your native country, but they can make exceptions.

You can get Russian visa support for 12 Euro here:

http://www.visadiscount.com/eng/index.htm

If the situation is as bad as it is - you will need to get to RU anyway and using choo-choo.

So you maybe think ahead...

In any case - worth to check with SIA, Aerosvit and Aeroflot.

According to the latest information, Frankfurt Airport will be fully open again, so hopefully you can fly back very soon. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

In case you're still stuck there Friday, let me know if you'd like to come down south. (Heidelberg? Speyer? Worms? Some of the smaller towns here? ) I could show you around, something else apart from Frankfurt Airport.

I join Christine and would love to join her to show you around somewhere she suggested! Also for Saturday. Why haven't you posted earlier? I would have taken you on the Rhein river boat last weekend! (sorry that I cannot offer beds, my apartment is too small).
But as Chrstine said, they have opened Frankfurt airport and I can hear the planes flying in and out (I live approx. 40 km south).

Thank you all for your kind advice. As we are now hoping to be leaving on Friday, if our airline (USAIR)gets permission to fly, we will not be able to take up your offers.

I have seen the beautiful cities of Heidelberg, Speyer & Worms in past visits & we did get to ride a Rhine boat before all of this has happened.
I really like Germany, but I & my brother must go home & God willing we will Friday. If not I will send out an SOS.

Good luck, John & brother :-) Wow, I am really happy that you have been to these cities! Not many non-German travellers find their way to Worms :-)
Eberbach Monastery would be close to Frankfurt (well, somehow) or Eltville.
Give us a call in case your flight won't leave as promised.

Travel Tips for Frankfurt am Main

Plenty of green

by universalgypsy

Surprisingly enough, this city has plenty of parks. The most beautiful of which has to be the Chinese Gardens - at the beginning of Bergerstrasse. It is small but ornate and very serene. The only thing that will break your concentration are the cute group of ducklings that splash around the pond. There is a rose garden right next to it, so if the asian gardens are not your thing you can switch without having to move too far. There is also a huge board for chess players!

One of the publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair

by Nemorino

Here is a look at one of the 6,691 exhibits at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2004. This particular exhibit is at stand 131 in row E of Hall 3.0, which is the ground floor of the huge new Exhibition Hall no. 3.

By coincidence, this stand belongs to a Munich publishing house called Langenscheidt, which is a leading German publisher of dictionaries and language learning materials, among other things.

The most important cultural tip when in Frankfurt: BE SHARP :))
This is the rule of germans and especially of Frankfurt's inhabitants..and it's a good one that I personally like..it's good to be punctual.

For you guys who have just moved to Frankfurt, you can get movies in English at the Turmpalast Cineplex.

It's located a few minutes from the Hauptwache, and has (I think) 5 or 6 screens showing reasonably recent movies.

Vogelburg (near Bad Camberg)

by MichaelFalk1969

The Vogelburg is a "parrot zoo" that keeps parrots that have been neglected by and taken from their owners. In this way, it serves as a kind of "bird asylum". The parrots usually have spacious enclosures and can fly freely. You can even feed them! Quite scary, because once you feed the first nut, you`ll have scores of parrots on your shoulders. It is great fun for kids and families. It is worthwhile to assist this institution with your entrance fees - it serves a good cause.

It is located 1 hour west from Frankfurt. Take the motorway direction Wetzlar and leave at the turnoff Bad Camberg.
