Churches - Katharinenkirche
This historic church is just off the main shopping street - the Zeil - in central Frankfurt. It's proximity to a number of tram, subway, and bus lines makes it an ideal place to "meet up" with someone.

Early morning landing in Frankfurt
My husband(travmad)and I are traveling to Frankfurt Germany on Christmas for a week to visit a friend at his home in Bensheim south of Frankfurt. We understand that Christmas is a quiet family holiday and that we will unfortunately miss the festival markets. We're looking for suggestions on small or nearby sites/sights or to-dos...We're budget travelers who enjoy hiking, food, beer, wine, art, cool landscapes, quirky local spots. Any suggestions?
Speyer has renamed it's Christmas Market to Christmas and New Year's Market and keeps it open till 6. January.

And also besides this Speyer is always worth a visit

Bensheim is in the mid of the Bergstrasse

Bergstrasse is also a wine growing region. And the castles dotted along it provide nice walks (if the weather allows this).

Bensheim lists a number of trip suggestions on their homepage (albeit in German only)

Interesting hiking options are the Felsenmeer and the Melibokus. Both in hiking distance of Bensheim.
Also very close is the Lorsch Abbey. Despite UNESCO world heritage it cannot compete with the (next close one) Speyer at all. But as it is so close to Bensheim ...

The of course the 2 bigger cities at the end points of the Bergstrasse

As I said in my nightlife tip, on our last night in Frankfurt, we met a German Banker named Holger. He showed us to the river, so we invited him to have a drink with us. Afterwards, rather than deserting us, he took us around Frankfurt and showed us the town hall, giving us the history of a lot of stuff. It was like having our own private tour guide -in the dark, but it was still a fun time- and he was soooo incredibly nice! He walked with us all around Frankfurt, until midnight, even though he had to get up for work the next morning!
Somehow there's one particular spot in Frankfurt that is considered the warmest spot in whole Frankfurt (?) that allows banana & palm trees to grow !!!
This phenomenon is quite unusual for the whole Germany in general.
I've noticed a tourist guide leading a group of German visitors to this spot and explaining them how the fruits are grown.
This particular place in Frankfurt is located by the River Main and close to Nizza am Main coffee house & bar (address: Untermainkai 17, 60329 Frankfurt/M, Telf: 069/299207511).
The stadium of Eintracht Frankfurt.
If you're into football come visit the Commerzbank Arena, formerly known as Waldstadion.
O.K., I'm a fan of Eintracht Frankfurt, but honestly, the atmosphere in our stadium is brilliant, magnificent, I'd almost say unique. But try for yourself and come to see a match here.
The arena's got a foldable roof, that works like a huge umbrella. When it's open you can see the planes just above your head, heading for the airport.
This store is great! They carry women's, men's and children's wear -- most of the times, all 3 in 1 store!
What's really good about H&M would be the selection and range of clothings they have -- it's wide enough to suit all styles and tastes.
I did especially like the clothes for the younger, more casual look as they did look pretty bohemian. :) So be ready with your wallet to find great buys!
Also, look out for their sales where you can get tops and skirts for as low as 4.90 euro! Great isn't it?! hehehee...
Bear in mind that if you're using your CREDIT CARD, you must show ID, so it's best to bring along your PASSPORT if you intend to use plastic money in this shop! :)
Other than that, there are no such restrictions in other shops I've come across. Everything's super expensive in Frankfurt.
However, do get the yummy strawberry tarts that they sell...
There's a whole layer of fresh strawberries sealed in a layer of gelatin, seated atop a layer of cream and under that a nice crust.
Oooooh... uber-yummy!
Of course you should also get the Ritter Sport chocolate bars which I saw going for as little as 0.59 euro a bar on sale in a major departmental store!
They also have a wide array of really yummy gummies! So if you have a sweet tooth... hehehhe... enjoy! Frankfurt is amongst one of the most expensive cities in Germany, so... expect to pay more!
Don't do your shopping there unless you really have to, or if you spot a really good bargain!
