What would be the most economical way of travelling an itinerary as follows?
Day 1: Frankfurt airport -- Mainz (sightseeing in town)
Day 2: Mainz -- Offenbach (sightseeing in town) -- Frankfurt airport
I will be travelling alone, on Sat-Sun. Should I buy a tageskarte for 9.5 EUR on each day?
... you aren't serious about Offenbach, are you? A promising candidate for the title of Ugliest City in Germany. You got better suggestions in that other thread...
Really? One of my best friends said that Frankfurt was the most boring city he had visited in Europe, which I didn't agree. I'd like to see the Leather Museum, and I don't know what I could realistically fit in in the remaining few hours I have on Sun morning before my flight.
ellyse, hi! Have you seen Heidelberg? I did that on a day-trip from Frankfurt and I really liked it. There was a cablecar to the top of the mountain (not nearly as high as the lovely ones in China!) but there was a good view of the river and the famous bridge. Haven't been to Mainz or Offenbach, so can't really advise you on that. But a quick roundtrip on the train up and down the Rhine might please you? Anyway, nice to hear from you again! (and I'm coming back to China again in October 2011! Gotta climb Huangshan with mom again!) -SandiM
Hi SandiM! No, haven't been to Heidelberg yet, but I've kept it in mind for my next time -- in a warmer season! I'm actually in need of ideas for 20th-21st Feb now... trying to recycle ideas which everyone has already given me. Doesn't help that my laptop just died... now on a friend's laptop and not very used to it. :( But at least I have one to use.
On September 5, 2004, just a week after the Museum River Bank Festival, there was a Theater Festival put on jointly by the Frankfurt Opera and the City Theater (schauspielfrankfurt), which are both in the same building on Willy-Brandt-Platz. The Opera is in the west part of the building, and the Theater occupies somewhat smaller premises in the east part.
They had a full program of tours, demonstrations, interviews, recitals and performances from 11.00 a.m. until well into the evening. I was at a conference that weekend in Oberschleißheim, near Munich, so by the time I got back to Frankfurt it was already the middle of the afternoon and I had missed half the program, but the other half was really good, and VERY well attended. I'll post a travelogue one of these days with more details and photos.
In this photo Almuth Hein and Andreas Skipis are conducting an opera quiz -- just one of the many program points at the festival.

If you are fortunate enough to be working in Germany and you have a birthday that falls on a work day, then you are expected to bring in a birthday cake to the office. You might also be expected to take your colleagues for a drink after work to celebrate. And yes, you pay! But its certainly considered rude not to at least bring a cake on your birthday!
I think it is worth to visit the Hessenpark, a museum with halftimbered houses which is located about 40 km north of Francfort in Neu-Anspach. It shows how people have been living in the Bundesland Hessen in the past.
You can combine it with the Saalburg, a reconstructed roman fortress.
The Rheingau area, ca. 1 hour west of Frankfurt, is a pretty wine region around the charming city of Eltville, famous for the "Riesling" white wine. The Eberbach monastery is worth a visit and famous due to the fact that parts of the film "The Name of the Rose" (with Sean Connery) were shot in this location.
