Frankfurt HBF lockers

by Karlie85

My husband and I will be traveling through Germany and we'll have just a few hours to explore Frankfurt Am Main. We'll have luggage that is on the larger side and I'm wondering if locking up our luggage in Frankfurt HBF is a reasonable idea. Are there ample lockers? Most importantly, are they secure? How does it work — is there an attendant that helps you or is it self-serve?

Also how close is the train station from the city centre? What's the best way to get there? Walk? We won't have much time, so we were considering dropping off our bags and seeing as much as we can.

Thanks in advance for your help!

There are both "self service" lockers (small and big) and a manned luggage depot, which will take your bags even if they don't fit in a locker. They are both secure. Lockers and depot are oposite the ticket office.

It´s about 1,5 km to Zeil (shopping) or Roemer (historic). 2 stations with S-bahn or U-bahn or walking. Lockers are self-service (72 hour maximum) and i think secure, there might be somewhere upstairs also a luggagestorage with an attendant (haven´t been there since a while), more expensive.

There is specific information about lockers at this URL:

http://www.bahnhof.de/site/bahnhoefe/de/sued/frankfurt__hbf/service/gepaeck/gepaeck__.html

Unfortuately, there doesn't seem to be an English version but you could probably use a dictionary or some online translation tool to get the relevant information.

The coin-operated lockers are reasonably secure. Two things: first, make sure the locker is closed and locked before you depart. I've seen more than a few, erm... uniquely attired young men carrying aromatic hand-rolled cigarettes... run through locker areas, tugging at random doors and taking anything they found. Second, be sure not to lose your key. If your key disappears, so will your luggage in very short order.

For seeing as much as you can take the virtual city tour:

http://www.frankfurt.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=317578&_ffmpar[_id_inhalt]=177743

( www.frankfurt.de Click tab "tourism"-> "sightseeing" left hand column -> "more" under virtual city tour if the link doesn't copy right.)

Frankfurt a. M. is very walkable, you can see the main sights in half a day if you rush it.

IIRC the fastest way to get to the area with the most sights is by taking the underground from Hbf, but it is also possible to walk.

If you are flying in and out of Frankfurt consider buying the Frankfurt Card at the tourist information, it covers public transport to and from the airport and within the inner city as well as gives you some discounts. This card is 15 EUR for a group of up to 5 people.

See Alt Sachsenhausen. This old part of town is particularly charming and is full of great restaurants, bars, and cafes. The area is probably the best place in the city to sample its specialty, apple wine. When I was there, on a Saturday in June, the area seemed full of people -- most seem to congregate on or around Schweizer Platz (see photo).

Schiller statue. It is located in a beautiful part right next to Hauptbahnhof - main railway station - and again, contrasts with all that skyscrapers around. By the way, on this photo you can find a red dot on the glass surface of the building - it is the red car cabriolet in real size hanging there!

Opel Skyliners basketball !!!!

by mauro_pd

Bad event for the local basketball team but on January 5th, 2005 they´ve been defeated by the italian team Benetton Treviso.
No matter about the result, I´ve been at the match cause I was curious about the event itself ... and ... WOW ... these guys know how to organize such a show.
Do not miss a Skyliners match if you have a chance !!! Bring a camera with you !

If you want to see a different, more modern/industrial and less 'touristy' side of Frankfurt, try this: take bus 37 west from the train station and complete the loop around the Briefzentrum to return back to the station.

This will take you about 15 minutes and you will be able to see interesting highlights along the way including a power plant, cool residential neighborhoods, a postal sorting facility, and much more.

Darmstadt - Mathildenhöhe

by MichaelFalk1969

Darmstadt is better than its reputation. The city was heavily bombed in WW2, and the rapid rebuilding afterwards shows. Yet this city has a really interesting sight to offer, the "Mathildenhöhe", an artists colony with a good art noveau-museum and a russian-orthodox chapel. Also worthwhile: The Rosenhöhe, a Botanical Garten with roughly 200 species of roses, flowering from June to September.
