Frankfurt to Prague (and Krakow) by train - DB info is confusing

by izlay

Based on replies to other similar questions, I've gone to the Deutsche Bahn site and found tickets from Frankfurt Hbf to Prague Autobusova (I assume that's the main bus station there). The fare is 59 Euro and all looks fine, but I'm confused by the "Products" info, where it tells which types of transport are used - it says ICE and bus. And that the travel time is 6 hours. There are no connections listed (I was expecting to see a connection in Nurnburg), and no indication of when the bus part comes in - I would think that bus travel would lengthen the time, not shorten it from 8 hrs to 6 hrs. What am I missing here?

I'll be traveling with 3 children under age 8, so would like to avoid bus travel in general and reduce my connections.

Following a couple of days in Prague, we'll be heading on to Krakow, so any train travel tips for that end are also welcome.

You only need to take the bus if you choose to take that particular departure time.

There are other departure times which will deposit you in Prague's main station (e.g.the 11.19) and involve no bus journey. I would suggest you choose one of thoseif you do not wish to take a bus, although it doers seem that the train+ bus journey is quicker.

As Hans says, the arrow to the left of each departure will give you details.

How did I miss that?! Sorry for such a simple question, and thanks for the quick replies!

No probs.

Arrow is easy to miss, as is the link which lists intermediate stops. :-)

O........for the rest of the rip.

Bahn.de is excellent for times and details for almost all European trains, obviously. Totally reliable (accidents and emergencies excluded, obv).

The Czech railway site in English is here:

http://www.cd.cz/static/eng/

and the Polish railway site in English here:

www.polrail.com

Finding international fares on either (in English) is not easy, but both countries have fares which are very reasonably-priced indeed.

Not in this case. To the surprise of all DB (German Rail) has introduced in August this new express bus service from Nuremberg to Prague. The train links into the Czech Republic are rather poor. (This bus is "railway politics", i.e. to mount the pressure on Czech Rail to get their things in order.)

You won't get around at least one change from Frankfurt to Prague. These buses have compulsory seat reservation (incl. in the ticket price). They depart directly in front of Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof (main train station). Not from Nuremberg ZOB (central bus station) which is around the block). You can enforce train only alternatives if you add at the DB timetable

Travel Tips for Frankfurt am Main

You can take a cruise along...

by acemj

You can take a cruise along the waterfront and get great views of the city. The speed at which a riverboat travels and the leisurely feel of the ride makes this a great way to get an initial feel for the place. Of course, walking is the best way to truly get to know a place, but the photos are better from a boat!

Football 2006

by chicabonita

Normally I'm not interested in football at all! But when I listened on the radio about the football globe I had to see it.

Just had a look from outside. It was amazing. The globe changed various times.

You can find it in front of the Alte Oper. Sorry but I have no idea how long it will be there. Maybe you could find some usefull information on the globe's website ....

U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt

by Nemorino

As recently as thirty-five or forty years ago this was a completely open building. People used to walk in just to get a drink of water, since they had an American-style electrically-cooled drinking fountain, which is otherwise unheard of in Germany. People with cars could simply drive into the parking lot and park. There was a sign saying they shouldn't park backwards because the exhaust fumes were getting into people's offices.

With the Vietnam war came the need for increased security. First they built a tall metal fence, then installed a guard house, then a second guard house at the corner to make sure no suspicious people get through to the first guard house. Now the entire street is blocked off for three blocks, with barbed wire, tank traps and permanent police presence.

Of course there is no denying that security is a necessity. I know some nice people who work in there, and wouldn't want them to get blown up since they are certainly not responsible for the things the American government does to incur the wrath of the rest of the world. In fact, I wouldn't want to get blown up myself when I go there every ten years to get a new passport.

The people who do security checks of course have to keep their guard up, and it is doubtless better to have them err on the side of caution than the other way around. When I went in last winter it was my bicycle helmet that stymied them. They acted as though they had never seen such a thing before and put it through the machine three times before calling their supervisor, who made a swift executive decision on the matter.

Fortunately the really important things like voter registration can be taken care of on the phone or by mail.

Update: The U.S. Consulate has now moved to its new location at Giessener Strasse 30 in Frankfurt. The additional photos on this tip show my first impressions of the new consulate compound -- lots of fences!

Ex-Volksbildungsheim

by Nemorino

This attractive building at the Eschenheimer Tor, just one block north of the Hauptwache in the city center, is now a multiplex cinema called Metropolis.

For most of its history, though, the building was known as the Volksbildungsheim and was the center for adult education in Frankfurt. It was originally built in 1908, and became the Volksbildungsheim right after the First World War in 1919. Though it suffered some damage in the bombings in the Second World War, it was quickly rebuilt (except for the top floor) and again served for many years as a meeting hall and a highly central and convenient venue for adult education.

Unfortunately the Adult Education Center (VHS or Volkshochschule) gradually let itself be forced out of the building in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. This was because the VHS was run by political appointees, first of one persuasion, then another, who regarded the directorship of the Adult Education Center as a sinecure rather than a challenge or a responsibility. The building was allowed to deteriorate, and the badly needed remodeling and modernization never took place.

Second, third and fourth photos: After several years at a rather out-of-the-way location, the VHS has now moved to a newly-built Education Center on the (near) east side of Frankfurt, at Sonnemannstrasse 13. So this is where you can now go for adult education courses like Frankfurt OperaTalk, Opern-Gespräche, Willkommen in der Welt der Oper, Cambridge Advanced English or Conversation and more, just to mention a few of the many courses that are held in this new building.
