howdy VT people,
i'm coming out to kassel for work for about 10 days in early november. i'm expecting to have several free days in between as i only have things to do the first couple of days and the last day..soo...any suggestions on what i can do in the area for those in between days? i'm pretty flexible and open to just about anything.

Hi,
would recommend you to go to one off the hilly regions near Kassel and enjoy some of the nice old towns there and (late) autumn colours. For example the Harz range to the Northeast of Kassel, with towns like Wenigerode, Quedlinburg and Goslar and also vintage train rides (from Wernigerode and Nordhausen) to the highest peak, the Brocken.
Other areas are the Thuringer Wald and Rhoen to the Southeast (with towns like Eisenach and Erfurt nearby) to the Southeast or the Sauerland to the West of Kassel.

Be sure to visit the Kurhessen Therme spa/leisure complex in Kassel -- built in the 80ies as Germany's first luxury spa, it is still a very nice one... and close to the wonderful Wilhelmshoehe Castle mountain park. The water comes directly from a Volcanic hot spring and has a chemical makeup comparable to that of the North Sea. Kassel is surrounded by very nice hilly landscape (a bit like Kentucky), each sunny day should be used for exploring the quaint towns in that landscape. Easy to reach by regional train is Fritzlar with a wonderful old town surrounding the Cathedral. To the North, Hann Muenden, where the Fulda and Werra river are converging to form the Weser is equally nice. Other nice towns in the vicinity include Hessisch-Lichtenau and Witzenhausen. Göttingen is 45 kms to the north, very easy by train... a wonderful inner city with a great mixture of ancient half-timbered houses and multicultural student life as it is one of the most famous German university towns. Great pubs there, too.
Kassel being an ICE-train stop, you'll be in Berlin in less than 3 hours....
a must is a walk in the mountain park wilhelmshöhe which is really wonderful in autumn. also, the forests around kassel are worth a visit. for some culture,try the brothers grimm museum or the museum of sepulchral culture. inside the castle wilhelmshöhe is a very famous exhibition of art. a walk through the aue in central kassel is also interesting.

About 50 km west of Kassel is Bad Arolsen situated. It is a small & quiet town. It is situated in a very beautiful environment with a lot of walking & cycling possibilities.
Besides that, there is also the Schloss (Castle) which can be visited.

Firedrichsplatz (Frederick's Square) is the heart of Kassel. It's located just next to the main shopping street and a good place for relaxing or having a coffee in one of the many cafes. At the moment with documenta going on, Friedrichsplatz has been turned into a poppy field which looks magnificent. Unfortunately, this is only the case for 100 days - but who knows if Kassel's inhabitants don't get used to the field and want to keep it? We shall see next year!
