Travel Tips for Kassel
Athena
by AndyRG
Kassel is the home of Documenta Exhibition, an ideal city for art-lovers. This exhibition is held every five years, the next one will be in 2007.
Athena was only one of the (copies) statues of an exhibition about ancient greek and roman antiquities, which had been taken place in Documenta Hall.
Probably the most important...

Probably the most important destination for visitors: Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. It has been built at the end of the 18th century, a time Germany was ruled by obscure and not so obscure dukes, princes and lords. Their remainders are worth to be seen.
It houses - I guess - one of Europe's most important collection of dutch, german and italian painters from the 16th and 17th century; after being renovated, this museum is worth more than one visit.
It's embedded in a wonderful park area, created by english garden architects of the 18th century.

I have to laugh when I think of all of the time i have spent in Kassel...at the Bahnhof. I always had to go through here to catch trains. They have a really nice bakery here and stop and have a beer outside if you have a chance (the tables are out under a big roof in front of the station, so unless it is blowing the rain in from March to September, sit outside.) They have a really cool castle here, but I haven't been. I was really surprised to find out that my grandmother's family originated from there a during the time of Otto the Red.
Hopefully next time I am there I can visit the town. =)
