City of half-timbered houses
"A gem of architecture"
Melsungen is located 20 km (14 miles) south of Kassel on the major A7 highway. It has a population of around 12,000 inhabitants and you might be tempted to call it a sleepy town...but the folks there may be lucky not to be so much in the focus like maybe Heidelberg or Rotenburg ob der Tauber. Yet Melsungen is a real gem to discover.
Come walk with me through the center of this small city - yes it is a real city (!!!) with all the legal city rights given in the middle ages - and maybe upon the hills around with a magnificent view over Melsungen and the green surroundings.
(will be continued)
I was lucky to purchase a world-map software to study virtually all places in the world - and also found Melsungen, of course. It is a pity that the resolution is poor when approaching the spots, yet it is useful to exlore the "surroundings" and get an idea of the general setup of the location.
About 12,000 inhabitants is not much it seems but Melsungen is located in a valley and surrounded by lots of green forests. The next bigger city is Kassel, 25 km north. So there is no need for more vibrant life. The major Autobahn A7 passes close by (on the satellite photo the grey line in the lower left corner) and it is easy to go south to Frankfurt/M in 90 minutes.
