Taxi from Frankfurt Airport to Rudesheim vs renting a car.

by erik2

Will it be cheaper to take a taxi from Frankfurt Airport to Rudesheim than renting a car from the airport? We are 4 people.

Regards Inger Norås, Stavanger, Norway

Hi Inger,

train is most probably the cheapest version, even for 4 people. But it depends what you want to do afterwards, e.g. visit more of the region.

Taxi: the distance between Frankfurt Airport and Rüdesheim is approx. 50 km. For the distance of 30 km between Airport and Darmstadt I usually pay 40 Euro with a taxi, so to Rüdesheim it might be approx. 70 Euro.

Car rental: typical fees for the day are 30-40 Euro, everything included (except gas). But this is only if you bring the car back to the original rental station. Dropping the car somewhere else requires a drop off fee. It can be high, especially if the drop off location is far away. So drop off fee might not be that high.

Train: have a look at Bahn website (you can pick other languages if you like, but it seems Norwegian isn't among them):
http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml
Type in Ruedesheim (ue for the ü), and pick Frankfurt Airport, not Frankfurt Airport Fernbahnhof because this is the one for ICE/IC/EC trains and these won't stop in Rüdesheim. There seems to be no direct train though, connections either in Wiesbaden or in Frankfurt. But it cannot be more expensive than 10 Euro per person, most probably cheper. Oh, which reminds me: since you are 4 and both destinations are in the state of Hesse, you can buy a Hessenticket.

I'll come back with more information.

Back with more information about the prices.

It seems that Hessenticket is the best option for you. It covers a full day, within the state of Hessen and costs 31 Euro. Details about it here on the page of Frankfurt's transport system (called RMV):
http://www.rmv.de/coremedia/generator/RMV/Tickets/Fahrkartensortiment/VielfahrerTickets/ARTVOLL/FAHRK__VIEL__ARTVOLL__Hessenticket__en.html

You can look up times etc also on the same site:
http://www.rmv.de/coremedia/generator/RMV/Sprachen/SPRACH__ART__en.html
Type in Frankfurt Airport and Ruedesheim. Then you arrive at a page which wants you to refine your entries. Select Frankfurt Main Airport, Terminal 1 and Rüdesheim (Rhein) Bahnhof. You should end up here:
http://www.rmv.de/auskunft/bin/jp/query.exe/en?ld=14.6&L=vs_rmv&seqnr=1&ident=jd.0107236.1281260788&OK#focus
and depending on the connections, it is either 7,15 Euro or 10,30 Euro (and less for kids).

Hope this helps.

Just to add to the excellent information you got about the Hessenticket:
It's valid on the regional trains after 9 am on a weekday, all day on the weekend, in second class only.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: FRA
To: Ruedesheim(Rhein)
and select as means of transport "only local transport".

Single ticket (RMV tariff) is EUR 7,15. A mini group (2-5 persons) day ticket is EUR 23,60. Thus this is the cheaper ticket for 4 persons.

Ah :-)) Thanks @abalada :-) Another lesson learned today :-))

Travel Tips for Rüdesheim am Rhein

Try the Car Ferry from Bingen it is worthwhile

by charlesracine

It is a nice experience, with good views, using a different mode of transportation. In Ruedesheim there is souvenir shopping City wide. But, for accommodations in a less touristy location, I prefer Assmannshausen 3KM down stream/north, 3 minutes by train.

wise words on great architecture

by globetrott

Watch out for the many proverbs, that you may find on the walls of the houses in Ruedesheim.

This one I found in Drosselgasse :
Heiterkeit und Frohsinn sind die Sonne
unter der alles geheiht (Jean Paul)

(Happiness is the sun, under which everything grows)

Wer die Welt vernünftig ansieht,
den sieht auch sie vernünftig an ! (Hegel)

(When you look sensible at the world, the world will also look sensible at you)

These translations are certainly not really perfect, but may show you a bit of the meaning.
Obviously people are able to understand them easily, when they are drunk enough ... ;-))

Nice small bar, Danish and English spoken too.

by charlesracine

Babela Pub is a good location in Assmannshausen for a beer or two. A small night spot where the local hotel workers come for a night cap after work. It was formally known as Danske Kro and Danish or English also is no problem. About three blocks from the Rhein, cross the train tracks, by the train station, then on the right side of Niederwaldstr walking up the hill, only a slight incline. It is only a short 3 minute train ride from Ruedesheim.

Walk the Drosselgasse and travel through history

Drosselgasse will be full of tourists, but for some reason even on an August Saturday it was bearable. You will see restaurants and stores full of kitsch, but you are here for the old buildings and their varied decorative delights!

Boosenburg / Oberburg

Full of great buildings and architecture, you will also find this great old castle here. Unfortunately it is privately owned and not open to the public. The tower dates back to the 9th century whilst the rest was added during the Baroque period.
