Are the wine shops open ?

by Diplomat

Hi,
we are travelling to Rüdesheim area before Xmas this year.

Does anybody know if the wine shops, Weinguts and estates (for example Breuer, Weil, Schloss Johannisberger, Kloster Eberbach) are open for visits and purchasing wine between 22.12.2003 - 3.1.2004 ?

Thanks,
Atte

Re: Are the wine shops open ?

by PeteNL

I was there years ago around Christmas time visiting friends, and we also went to one of the wine shops. Should not be any problem finding shops, often enough they are also linked with a winetasting bar/restaurant. Only days that everything might be closed are the 25th/Jan 1st, and late afternoon/evening of the 24th/31st.

Have a nice stay!

Travel Tips for Rüdesheim am Rhein

My mother & Ruedesheimer Kaffee

by globetrott

Ruedesheimer Kaffee is served inside this lovely cup as follows:

The waiter will bring the cup, a small 2cl-bottle of "Asbach Uralt" and will pour the brandy into the cup at the table.
Then the brandy will be set on fire by long matches. That way most of the alcohol will disappear and a certain flavor will be added by the burning.
Then the coffee and some sugar will be added and finally topped by whipped cream and some chocolate chips.

It was pretty cold that day in Ruedesheim, as you may see on my pics, with a steady breeze, lots of clouds and just a bit of sunshine.

Therefor my mother needed 2 Ruedesheimer Kaffee, while I took my pics.

When driving, this kind of coffee is not advisable, even when most of the alcohol will be burned.

Loreley, by Heinrich Heine 1823

by chancay

translation by Mark Twain 1876

An ancient legend of the Rhine
I cannot divine what it meaneth,
This haunting nameless pain:
A tale of the bygone ages
Keeps brooding through my brain: The faint air cools in the gloaming,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,
The thirsty summits are drinking
The sunset's flooding wine;
The loveliest maiden is sitting
High-throned in yon blue air,
Her golden jewels are shining,
She combs her golden hair;. She combs with comb that is golden,
And sings a weird refrain
That steeps in a deadly enchantment
The listener's ravished brain:
The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
He sees not the yawing breakers,
He sees but the maid alone: The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
So perish sailor and bark;
And this, with her baleful singing,
Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.

The Niederwald monument

The watch on the Rhine

There roars a shout like thunder clap, as ratting sword or swirling wave:
The Rhine , the Rhine, to the German Rhine!
Who now will guard that mighty stream?

A hundred thousand hearts leap up,
the eyes of all begin to blaze,
Tis Germans, loyal, firm and strong, defending sacred border land.

With eyes raised high to heaven” meads, where hero forebears watch over them, each swears with rugged battle thirst:
oh Rhine! stay German as my breast!

While yet remains bright ardour's glow, and still strong hand to draw a sword,
or arm to wield a well aimed gun,
no friend will tread your sacred bank.

As oaths cry out and waves mount high, the flags stand lofty in the wind.
Along the Rhine, the German Rhine, we each and all do now stand watch.

Broemserhof & mechanical music-instruments

by globetrott

Broemserhof / Broemser Manor is a lovely castle, dating back to the 15th till 17th century.
Once it was the castle of the knights Broemser von Ruedesheim, TODAY it is a museum of mechanical music-instruments.

This is an interesting building, with a great half-timbered facade, that you should not miss - it is just a few meters off the end of Drosselgasse.

And for shure you will also see this geat vintage-car parked there, or you may see it somewhere in town, as it is still used daily as a taxi for special guests.
