Travel Tips for Weilburg

Save money with the Weilburg Card

by himalia11

If you plan to visit several sights in Weilburg, think about getting the Weilburg Card. This costs 8,50 Euro (4,50 Euro for children) and gives you ONE free access to EACH of the following:
- game park
- calcit cave
- castle
- mining museum.
It is a valid for one year, you can get it at the tourist information (address: Mauerstrasse 6-8).

You can also save some money if you are in Weilburg at the residence market in October (castle costs 1 Euro, mining museum is free).

Little dog

by gubbi1

When you are in the garden of the castle you might miss the small dog jumping into the deep. Often when coming to town during my childhood I used to watch the small dog. In case you haven't taken the guided tour of the castle, you might not know the story behind.
Once the prince living in the castle left his dog behind in the castle, locked in a room. The small dog scratching at the door was not heard and then looked out an open window. Down below the castle the prince passed by to go hunting. The dog saw him and jumped out of the window down into the river Lahn. Exhausted from the jump and the swim through the river the dog died in the arms of the prince after just reaching him. The prince ordered to put a monument for the dog on the castle.

Weilburg - Part of my childhood

by gubbi1

My parents originate from Weilburg, so I have a strong relation to the town as i was visiting my grandparents frequently in the city Weilburg and the village Ahausen, which belongs to Weilburg. It is filled with memories and I really like it.
Dominated is the town by the castle on a rock above town and the river Lahn, making a loop of more than 180 degrees around the castle. I will try to add information about the town here. There is a lot of history, which I first have to check out myself, not to spread any mistakes to the world... :)))
On the pic you can see the inner square of the castle.

The church

by gubbi1

A central point of downtown Weilburg is the Schlosskirche (castles church) at the market square. It is attached to the castle and was replacing an older church on the same spot. The construction of the Schlosskirche was taking place between 1707 and 1708.

Something special of the church is the crypt. The emperors living in the castle were not only the emperors of Nassau, but also partly grand dukes of Luxemburg. There are now more than 30 emperors of Nassau and Luxemburg burried in the crypt. By this the crypt is not part of Germany, but belongs to the ground of Luxemburg.

The photo shows the Schlosskirche from inside the castles garden, which is located just behind the church.

The Schlosskirche is constructed in baroque style.

From inside the castle the prince had a special passway into the church, where he had his 'emperors loge'.

Baroque art.

Outside the church you will find a plate to commemorate the jewish inhabitants of Weilburg who got murdered, disappeared or had to escape abroad during the third Reich. You will find it if you follow the churchwall around the right corner (seen from the market square).
