Sea port
If you have the chance to spend some days in Rostock have a short trip to Warnemuende and take a tour through the sea port. From the boat you can sea the promenade, the cargo port and a military port. A tour takes about 50 min

I had assumed that Ossi had been someone famous, but my friend informed me that as the streets of Rostock are renewed, more and more of these simple engraved paving stones are being laid as reminders of the ordinary Rostock inhabitants who were vicitims of the Holocaust.
We discussed whether Ossi was an older man who had lived in the street between 1938-1942, (where we saw this plaque) but, sadly, the truth is, he was probably just a little 4 year old boy.
I was told that there are other memorials like this around the city streets but this was the only one I saw.
The entire eastern third of the old town was neglected on purpose and left to decay in DDR times. It must have been one of the worst-looking old town quarters in the whole of East Germany after 40 years of socialism. However, since the 1990s restoration has set in.
Now, 20 years after the reunification, most old houses that survived the war and four decades of neglect, and there are many, have been carefully restored.
The quarters around Nikolai and Petri church have become the most attractive parts of the old town. The streets were quiet, most visitors seem to miss this area because they hardly proceed beyond the old town hall. Continue, and explore the cobblestone streets. The steeples of the two churches are widely visible and help with orientation.
My tip: Lohbergstraße.
Many(!) more photos of Nikolai and Petri quarters
The city of Rostock was founded in 1218 and has today a population of 220,000 and is the largest city in the federal German state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern. In the Middle Ages, Rostock was a member of the Hanse League for centuries and one of the most important handling junctions for trade with the whole of Europe, particularly Scandinavia. With the foundation of the university in 1419, the city became the intellectual centre. In 1850 Rostock had the third largest sailing ship fleet in Germany. The well-known shipyard "Neptunwerft", founded in 1890, has been the biggest company in Mecklenburg.
