Travel Tips for Rostock
Rostock in 1984 - still in DDR - times
by globetrott
It was a very special feeling to see the other part of Germany, as the immigration & custom-controll reminded me a lot of the ports of CCCP and Poland - but everybody spoke German of course, and to all citizens of countries other than Germans they had been very friendly.
Our passengers had a bustour into the countryside, while I had a little stroll into Rostock...
The Monastery of the Holy Cross and Museum
by Kathrin_E
Queen Margaret of Denmark founded the convent of Cistercian nuns next to the town wall in 1270. The convent buildings now host the Kulturhistorisches Museum. Unfortunately I did not have enough time to see the museum.
The church is said to have a complete late medieval interior and furnishing – however, it seemed to be closed due to restoration works when I visited.
The courtyard and park around the former convent is an idyllic spot with benches under old trees. A building in the front yard contains an arts and crafts gallery and a small café. Behind it there is a small playground.
Kerkhofhaus
by Kathrin_E
Kerkhofhaus was named after the mayor Berthold Kerkhof who had it built around 1470. It is one of the oldest houses in Rostock, and one of the prettiest. The brick facade shows the typical gothic shape with the stepped gable.
Location: corner Große Wasserstraße/Pümperstraße, behind the old city hall
Mamuang's Rostock Page
by Mamuang
I moved to Rostock in Octobre 2000 due to my studies.
It´s - compared to Hamburg where I used to live for 4 years - pretty small and far from anywhere, but still nice. The Baltic with its many beaches is right next door and the city itself has many old architectural jewels. Since it´s in the former GDR (the eastern part of Germany, which was unified 1989) there are many more or less hidden relics of socialistic life style.
Rostock´s population is now a mere 200.000 (since 1989 there left about 50.000!) but the central part of town seems even smaller - most people live in concrete blocks in the outskirts. That fact and other social problems like huge unemployment figures lead to what gave Rostock a bad reputation not only known to (West-)Germans; some youths are quite bald-headed and tend to be pretty aggressive not only against foreigners. The most unfamous event was the attack of an asylum´s- seekers home in Lichtenhagen, one of the mentioned suburbs in the early 1990´s.
However most people think and act differently and didn´t confirm my prejudice against this town.
Questions and Answers
Q: Taxi/Tour "Want e-mail communication with a taxi/guide for tour in Warnemunde/Rostock UNESCO sites"
A: "Never heard of any UNESCO sites in Warnemünde or Rostock.
Are you talking about Wismar and Stralsund? These are entirely different towns and hiring a taxi for a day..."
