Astronomical clock
The history of St. Marien Church dates back to 1232. It is the biggest church in Rostock. and it survived WWII almost without damage.
Inside you'll find a lot of great art from the long history of Rostock as St. Marien was always the most important church, center of the protests in 1989 in Rostock.
The greatest treasure ist the Astronomical Clock from 1472. Take some time to discover all the wonderful details!
The old city hall was built in the 13th century after the three independent settlements (Altstadt, Mittelstadt, Neustadt) united and formed the city of Rostock. Rostock joined the Hanse and became one of the wealthiest and most powerful merchant cities around the Baltic Sea in the 14th and 15th century.
The medieval facade with the seven little spires on top was hidden behind a new baroque front in 1727. Underneath the baroque arcades the medieval portals and some frescoes are visible. From the back side the town hall reveals more of its medieval origins.
just three (or maybe only two hours stop over in Rostock when coming back from Greifswald, a little town more in the east on our way to Hannover...and well, what did I have to do? ....looking for boots with Cecilia ;-D - fortunately we found quite quickly a nice pair so we could have a little walk around the old town of Rostock as well. I didn´t have any cam with me, so these few photos were taken with mobile phone cam, sorry for the bad quality though.
