Campingplatz Drewoldke: Rügen's Best Campground
If you're looking for a nice campground just next to the sea (and a sandy beach!) with lots of shady sites to pitch up your tent amongst pine trees and sand dunes, then Drewoldke is your place to be. Located at the upper end of the Schaabe, one of Rügen's best beaches, Drewoldke couldn't have been built in a better place. No matter where you pitch up your tent or park your caravan, the sea is never further away than 5 minutes.
There are many spaces for tents, most of them in the light pine tree forest, and unlike in many other campgrounds you are free to place your tent wherever you want. The caravan sites are on the other side of the main path, so both groups of campers do not disturb each other. There are two medium-large washrooms, one at each end of the campground. They were more or less clean (and cleaned several times a day), but given the fact that the campground was full, there was a bit room for improvement in terms of cleanliness. Don't forget to bring your beach slippers!
Apart from that, there are a small supermarket and a kiosk on the campground, both of which provide you with food, the local newspaper, beach toys, souvenirs and other necessities. If you need but a few things, they are fine, but as prices are quite a bit higher than in regular supermarkets you might as well check out the "Netto" in Altenkirchen which is only 2km away. There's also a restaurant on site, but it didn't look too appealing so we didn't try it.
Another thing to mention is the very friendly and helpful staff of the campground. The receptionists will help you out with all your questions, the technical staff will deal with whatever problems arise concerning, well, technical issues. It also seemed no problem to prolong your stay if you wish to do so - just mention it at the reception and they see what they can do. Another plus: you park your car on the campground itself. We've seen other campgrounds on Rügen where the cars had to be left outside the actual camping area and thus not only far away from where your tent is but also in the open where thieves could possibly more easily break open the cars. At Drewoldke, however, there never seemed to be an issue like that, and we felt very save for both our car and our belongings.
For 2014, the main season prices are as follows:
per adult: € 6.00
per child between 4 and 14: € 3.50
per tent: between € 6.00 and € 10.50
per RV / caravan: between € 9.00 and € 10.50
per car: € 3.50
per pet: € 4.50
Campingplatz Drewoldke's ultimate plus is its location. It's located at the upper end of the Schaabe, one of Rügen's best beaches. By "at" I mean "just next to" - the beach is basically just behind some dunes, not more than 5 minutes away from any spot on the campground. Furthermore, the beach is very clean, mostly sandy (with some pebbly parts every now and then) and big enough for people to disperse. The water is rather shallow, but that's the same nearly everywhere on the German Baltic Sea coast. Then again, this makes it perfect for families with young children.

The service at reception should be partially improved.

Feriendomizil Rugana, Bakenberg: Holiday homes with special flair
What a beautiful idea to build holiday homes like little valleys. The names are Weiler (hamlets). The homes are built in the regionla style. All Weiler have another colour and built around a little place, like a hamlet has. Green, with many plants and bushes, flowers and with meadows.
Inside of one home (also different sizes) are bigger or smaller, or mixed flats. The flats have private owners which are organized in and by a company, the operator of Rugana.
At entrance is the reception and information, a restaurant, wellness, spa, sauna and shops. There are also a golf place, mini-golf place and some more sport activities. In restaurant you have meals a la carte or buffet. Recommended for families with children, because they have corners inside restaurant for playing and outside, too. Flats are comfortable, mostly with little terraces.
Long beaches are only 200 ms far from the homes, behind forests.
At evening we could watch wild animals there.
It has such a nice surrounding, inmidst of nature, fields, trees everywhere, little lakes and so silent. Very pleasure and beautiful grounds.

Ferienhaus Behnceke_Daum_Nahrendorf: Near Kap Arkona
OK, I'm shamelessly plugging another business of one of my relatives, but this place is VERY nice!
My cousin, Ulli Behnecke, and her husband, Woelker, are part owners of this Apartment/Hotel.
This property is a weekly rental apartment house. There are seven apartments of various sizes that can house two to eight people. The prices vary by season. But the smallest apartment is about $370 (280 Euro)per week for two people in low season. The largest is about $1180 (890 Euro) per week for eight people in high season. Each apartment is unique in it's decor, all have at least one bath, the larger have two, and a full kitchen. The prices are really reasonable compared to hotel prices in the area and the apartments are spacious and comfortable. They all have a living room, dining and kitchen areas. This place is great for a large or extended family traveling together or an intimate place for honeymooners.
Reason why this property is called "Unter dem Reetdach", is because the building is an old farmhouse that actually has a thatched, reed roof. It is painted a cheery Delft blue. It is on the Island of Ruegen, near the town of Altenkirchen (little old church) , just 600 metres from the beach, there are trails from the property to the beach. It is not far from Kap Arkona.
The property boasts a Finnish sauna and lovely landscaping. It is quiet and secluded. It is great just to sit out and enjoy the sunshine in the yard on the many sunny days they supposedly have there.
There is a fully equipped playground for kids and the property is pet friendly, but you have to clear taking your pet to the property with the management prior to arrival . There may be a pet deposit involved depending on the type of pet(s) you wish to bring along.
They also have mountain bikes for a modest daily rental fee on the premises.
Also nearby is a riding stable with rent-a-horses. So if you ever wanted to ride a horse in the surf, here is your opportunity!
There is a website for the property, but it is only in German, so unless you verstehen Deutsch, you may not get much out of it other than looking at the really great pictures they have there. I am trying to convince my cousin to let me translate their website into English for them. They are mulling over whether it would be cost-efficient to have a bi-lingual website. In mean time, if you want to ask about the property, you may contact me, although you can contact the property directly through the website. I know my cousin speaks fairly fluent English, and I'm sure one of their partners does, too, so you may write them in English with your inquiries.

Hotel Waldfrieden / Sellin
We had not booked accommodation in advance. But I had searched the internet before heading to Rügen - some nice looking places printed out and off we went ...
All the places I had thought of in Binz were disappointing. Deals were "not available, sorry" etc. So we drove further to the neighbouring Sellin, which is small and by far not as "snobby".
Good decision. Stopped at the main street "Whilhelmstrasse" and asked at this Hotel. We got 2 rooms at the uppermost floor at a very reasonable rate - 60 and 65 Euro per room incl. breakfast buffet. The rooms were spacious, with a small kitchen (I learned this is called "efficiency" in America), private bathroom, couch, writing desk, tel, cable TV and a HUGE balcony overlooking the beautiful main street.
The location is excellent - central but quiet (at least when I was there). The architecture is very beautiful; built in 1907 in typical style with wooden balconies.
I just loved this balcony. Sitting in the evening sun (only the first evening unfortunately, the weather did not co-operate) and watching the folks walking on the street and chatting in the garden restaurants along the street ...
Breakfast buffet was quite good, the service okay. I thought the staff could have been a bit friendlier, though. The restaurant was quite good and the prices reasonable.
I would definitely stay there again.

DÜNENHAUS & HAUS BORUSSIA: Nice appartements
In the DÜNENHAUS you can rent elegant one to three room apartments from 36 EUR per day. The house from the period of promoterism is reconstructed and modernized completely. It disposes a sauna, seminar room and a garden in the beech forest.
In the HAUS BORUSSIA is a 100-square meter holiday flat for six persons.
In addition, it offers simple apartments with cooking facilities from 24 EUR per day.
Both villas lie at the nice and historical parkway (Wilhelmstrasse) to the main beach with the sea bridge. The DÜNENHAUS is about 250, the HAUS BORUSSIA approximately 350 meters away from the beach.
Sometimes the owners present german and american Cartoons from the 20ths and 30ths in the seabridge of Sellin. Very great!
