Travel Tips for Usedom
Kurkarte - Tourist Tax Ticket
From May to September tourists have to get a Kurkarte - pay tourist tax on Usedom. This is common practise in most tourist towns. The tax is supposedly used to help clean the towns, pay for extra life-saving personnel, generally to pay for all extras necessary because of the many tourists.
When you book accomodation, you're asked to pay it when checking in. If you're just on Usedom for a day, you can get your Kurkarte from a machine. These machines are standing next to the paths leading to the beach.
In all my years of travelling I was only checked once to see if I had bought the Kurkarte. You get reductions on some tours or talks when you show it.
Some more romance
That´s the bridge from mainland to isla Usedom. At evening a romantic place and view above the sea and the nature of the area.
The next two picture show some of the windmills on isla and one of the lighthouses.
A Memorial Site
Between Karlshagen and Trassenheide there is a memorial site for the victims of bombs in August 1943. They were forced labourers who had to work in the factories in Peenemünde during WWII, assembling rockets. When the allied forces tried to bomb the factories , they missed and hit the barracks for the forced labourers instead, killing about 750 people.
The cemetery and the memorial are close to the road leading up to the Northern part of Usedom.
