Zeughaus – the Arsenal
by Kathrin_E
The arsenal is a remarkable example of baroque military architecture. It was built by the Swedes (who possessed Wismar from 1648 to 1803) after the old arsenal had exploded in 1699. Nowadays the building hosts the town library.

Marktplatz and Wasserkunst
by Bigs
This market square is the main square in town and you will find a lot of restaurants around here which offers tables outside, so that you can enjoy the look over the square and the "Wasserkunst", a huge fountain in the middle of it!
Alter Schwede
by Kathrin_E
Wismar’s oldest house was built around 1380. In the middle ages the lower floors contained living rooms and offices, the attics served as storage. In 1878 the building became a pub which was named the “Old Swede”, referring to Wismar’s history under Swedish government from 1648 to 1803.
Fürstenhof – the Ducal Palace
by Kathrin_E
The Ducal palace was the seat of the Dukes of Mecklenburg until 1648. The building has an L-shape. The western wing is the older, it was built in 1512-1513 and still shows gothic ‘curtain’ windows. The northern wing was built in 1553-1555 and adopts the Italian renaissance, thus the ‘modern’ style of those times. Its façade is richly decorated with figures and ornaments in limestone and terracotta.
After Wismar became property of Sweden in 1648, the building became the seat of the highest Swedish law court for the North-German possessions. Nowadays it hosts the regional law court.
A Wombat in Wismar
by Russell_the_Wombat
We stayed in a hotel next to Wassertor, the only preserved medieval gate tower. Our room under the roof had two windows. One had a view of the harbour, the other into the lanes of the old town. I could not wait to go out and see more of the town!!!
Wismar was fun. I have never met so many people anywhere else who were interested in me and my travels. There were so many nice and funny little encounters with people offering to hold me for photos or enquiring about me. This photo was taken by a guy who sat next to us on the cruise boat.
One particularly sweet family even wanted to invite us for pancakes. Unfortunately we were unable to accept because we were in a hurry to catch the harbour cruise, but I handed them my VT card.
