Some Informations about Bockenem and the Timber-framed Houses in Lower Saxony!!
Bockenem is an endearing, small and yet charming city situated between Hildesheim/Börde and Seesen/Harz within the hill country of the southern part of Lower Saxony. For centuries craft and trade as well as the relationship with the 17 villages around have been the city's economic basis.
Having been granted civic rights about 1300,extanded and fortified in the 14th century,Bockenem was one of Lower Saxony's Hansa citiesin the 15th century.Until today the market place and the dominating Gothic church of St. Pankratius witness the height of the city's prosperity during the High Middle Ages.
The Thirty Years'War and three devastating fires- one of them destroyed 90 per cent of the city in 1847- brought heavy setbacks to the urban devolopment, nevertheless Bockenem always recovered.
After the fire of 1847, the city centre was rebuilt within a period of five years, according to the style of half-timbering used at that time.
Except for the historic Dean's house from 1523 and the southwest part of the medieval centre which has not been demaged by fires- until today this part holds the most pictuersque corners of Bockenem- all the half-timbered buildings have been built after 1847.
Nevertheless, there is a homogeneous townscape, the architecture of which gives an interesting impression of the way the so-called 'farming citizens'(Ackerbürger) were living at that time.
