Travel Tips for Braunschweig

Christmas Market

by Kathrin_E

The Christmas market in Braunschweig takes place in Burgplatz, the square surrounded by the Dom and the castle Dankwarderode in the heart of the city. It has in recent years extended all around the Dom and the castle and over to the square in front of the city hall.

The market opens in late November - a few days before the first Advent Sunday - and lasts till Dec 23, then closes for the holidays and reopens on Dec 27 and 28.

See my Christmas market travelogue for more pictures.

Technical University

by Kathrin_E

The university was founded in 1745 by the Duke of Braunschweig as educational institution between secondary school and university that taught humanities and fine arts and mathematical-technical subjects. In 1878 it was turned into a technical university. The focus of studies is still on science, mathematics and engineering.

The old main building (photo 1) was built by Konstantin Uhde in 1874-1877 in Italian renaissance style. After destruction during World War II only the front side was restored. The 17-storey skyscraper behind it (1954-1956 by Dieter Oesterlen) hosts several science institutes.

The square in front of the main building is surrounded by 3 modern buildings by Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer, architect and professor at the TU: the university library (photo 2), the administration and the Auditorium Maximum, the largest lecture hall (photo 3). The western facade of the AudiMax bears an abstract relief by the sculptor Hans Arp, after which students nickname the building "Amöbensilo" ("amoeba silo").
Needless to say that most students prefer sitting in the Auditorium Minimum to sitting in the Auditorium Maximum (the AudiMin is a cafe just round the corner...)

Around 1980 another tower (photo 4) was built along Wendenstraße which is used by the faculty of - ahem - architecture.

Traces of Lion Claws in the Dom Portal??

by Kathrin_E

The stone frame of the small Romanesque portal on the northern side of the Dom church shows significant scratches.

The legend tells us: Duke Henry the Lion participated in the crusades and brought a lion from the Holy Land. The lion had an injured paw, and Henry helped him. So the lion became his friend and companion. When Henry died and was buried inside the church, the grief-stricken lion sat outside the church door and scratched it with his claws to get to his master's grave.

The truth is less romantic: Faithful Christian warriors in the middle ages would scratch the church walls with their swords to sanctify their arms. Superstition considered the stone dust scratched off church walls a potent medicine against all kinds of illnesses.

Old City Market

by Leipzig

The Old City Market has been a location for trade and fairs for 700 years. It was planned in the 12th century. In it's middle is the Late-Gothic Fountain of the Virgin Mary, which is decorated with motifs from the bible.

Kammergebäude - Chamber Building

by Kathrin_E

The Kammer was the seat of the Duchy's financial authority. It is one of the few remaining buildings of the 18th century when Braunschweig again became residence of the Dukes, dated 1764.

The frontispiece shows the Guelph family crest with the jumping horse, which in modern times has become the crest of the federal state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony).
