Travel Tips for Braunschweig

If you like ice cream, read on...

by Colzy

Braunschweig seems to have replaced Munich's beer gardens with ice cream cafes and I for one am not complaining.

If you visit Braunschweig you will not have to walk too long before you stumble upon your first eis cafe and wander not much farther you will find your second. You get the drift.

You will see locals indulging in this treat with frightening regularity making it very hard to resist your own portion. And if you feel like spaghetti ice cream, look no more because you will find it on every menu in Braunschwieg. Don't feel like spaghetti? No problem, try the lasagne or pizza ice cream. My favourite has got to be the spaghetti carbonara which is beyond delicious.

Come to think of it, I feel like an ice cream right now...

Richmond Palace

by Kathrin_E

The little palace outside the town was built in 1768-1769 as pleasure palace and summer retreat for Duchess Auguste, an English princess, sister of King George III., who was married to Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand of Braunschweig. Since she felt homesick she named the palace "Richmond" after her home. The little palace is situated on top of a hill and overlooks and English landscape park along the river Oker.
The palace is usually not open for visitors but the courtyard and the park can be visited for free any time. The City of Braunschweig uses Richmond for official receptions, and it can be rented for meetings and other events, it is especially popular for wedding receptions.

Old City Hall (Rathaus Altbau)

by Nemorino

When I came by the Old City Hall there were some people waiting outside for a wedding. They all seemed happy about it except the bride, who was standing around smoking and looked as though she was waiting for her own execution. But maybe it was just that her tattoos looked a bit incongruous sticking out from under her wedding dress.

The banner above the entrance proclaims that Braunschweig has been chosen as Germany's "City of Science 2007".

St Ägidien Church: Interior

by Kathrin_E

St Ägidien church, the only example of cathedral gothic in Braunschweig, once was the church of a Benedictine monastery. Nowadays it's the catholic parish church of the city centre.

The building was begun in 1278 and completed exactly 200 years later. The magnificent interior contains the tomb of St Auctor, the local saint and patron of the city, who is buried in the central chapel in the back of the choir.
The 16th century pulpit originally came from the Dominican church of St Paul, was later transferred to the monastery of the Holy Cross and finally put up in its present location in 1948.

Alte Waage

by Kathrin_E

Praised as Braunschweig's most beautiful half-timbered house, Alte Waage is a fake like the Schloss. An inscription on the corner towards the church mentions the date 1533 in Roman numbers. The original, however, was destroyed to ashes and rubble in the firestorm of World War II, just like the entire surrounding quarter. For 50 years the square was empty. Only in 1994 the reconstruction has been built. Facades and entrance hall show timberwork but I am not so sure about the rest of the structure.

The building contained the city scales where the weight of the goods and the honesty of the merchants were controlled. Nowadays the local Volkshochschule uses it as headquarters and for their offices.
