Travel Tips for Braunschweig
Fresh food anyone?
by Colzy
On Wednesday and Saturday mornings there is a fresh food market held in the Alstadt markt opposite the old Rathaus. Make sure you bring a basket or bags because the produce is fresh and delicious at reasonable prices. Wherever the locals accumulate you know is a good thing. In summer, the variety of berries and the like is staggering and you have to be careful not to buy too much... always a problem of mine. Apart from fruit and veggies there are other local produce such as flowers, eggs, honey, bread, meat, cheese and fish. Tempting??
Medieval Kemenate (around 1300)
by Kathrin_E
Houses in medieval Braunschweig were usually built of wooden timberwork. Patrician families had a small stone house, called Kemenate from Latin caminus (oven, hearth) in the back of their courtyard which could be heated. This is where the family lived. These stone houses were comparatively fire-safe, so the vaulted basement served for storing valuables.
Before World War II more than 80 Kemenaten still existed in the old town. Only one of them, the one in Hagenbrücke, has been completely preserved, remnants of a few others are known.
Location: Hagenbrücke, west of Hagenmarkt
Löwenstandbild

The lion statue that symbolises Henry the lion is located in the middle of Burgplatz. The original can be seen in Burg Dankwarderode - it was built out of gold in 1166. The statue on the Burgplatz is only a replica.
Bürger Park
by Colzy
My lonely planet guide to Germany said that is has some of the nicest parks, museums and architecture.... the Büger Park is one of the things that contributed to this description. It boasts wide open spaces which border on the River Oker and so is a lovely place for a stroll.
It is a nice place to relax with a novel in the warmer months and also a nice place for a walk in winter to get out of the house and admire the effects of winter on nature in the midst of a city.

.
Yes. This is home.
This is the town where I was born and spent the first 22 years of my life.
Braunschweig - Brunswick to the English speaking world - once was a proud, almost independent city. Unfortunately they never managed to gain the status of a free imperial city. The Dukes of Braunschweig, whom the citizens had kicked out, fought their way back and made Braunschweig their residence in the 18th century.
The beautiful old town burnt down in World War II. Some important buildings were rebuilt, others even moved. City planners followed the concept of "tradition islands" - certain spots where historical architecture was preserved and rebuilt while the rest of the city centre shows modern post-war style.
In World War II, Braunschweig was hit by 40 air raids. 90% of the city centre were destroyed. The beautiful old town burnt down.
Some important buildings were rebuilt after the war, others even moved. City planners followed the concept of "tradition islands" - certain spots where historical architecture was preserved and rebuilt while the rest of the city centre shows modern post-war style.
