Travel Tips for Braunschweig
Summer festivals
by Colzy
If you are in Braunschweig I urge you to check out the event calendar because chances are something will be on in the region, particularly in summer when it feels like almost every weekend. You can do this by logging on to the website or visiting the tourist information office in the Burgplatz.
Pictured was the 2-day Feldschlossen (a local brewery) concert held in August 2004 in the Burgplatz. The headlining act were a band called 'Sweety Glitter and the Sweethearts' which was quite an experience I assure you :)
Renaissance House in Reichsstraße
by Kathrin_E
The renaissance house was built in 1630 for Mayor Georg Ackermann whose family crest is shown above the portal. The sculpted portal and oriel were added during the following years, they bear different dates in the 1630s. The date of construction is remarkable because it is in the middle of the Thirty Years War.
The house was heavily damaged in World War II. The front facade has been reconstructed. The upper storey, originally in timberwork, has however been rebuilt in stone. The interior is entirely modern. The building hosts offices of a health insurance company and municipal authorities.
Location: Reichsstraße, off Hagenbrücke north of Neustadtrathaus.
Obelisk - every town has one!
by Colzy
Lowenwall as it is presently known was completed in 1820. The oval grassy area, which is surrounded by a double row of chestnut trees, is dominated by the obelisk in the centre which was erected in 1823. At the base, there are four bronze lions and the monument is in remembrance of Dukes Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand and Friedrich Wilhem of Brunswick who died in battle against Napoleon.
It is a very nice place to relax and read a book and take time out for a little while.
Courtyard Houses
by Sjalen
The Von Veltheimsches Haus and the Huneborstelsches Haus are two surviving 16th century houses that were once part of the Burg courtyard and used as courtiers' houses. They are absolutely gorgeous and do go close to them to see the fantastic details. I have put several pictures here so that you can see the houses in their full surroundings, including the famous Lion fountain in the Burgplatz.
A Wombat In Braunschweig
by Russell_the_Wombat
Braunschweig provided many adventures for this little wombat, but a true blue Aussie isn't scared of anything.
I explored the city on horseback,
got to know Till Eulenspiegel and listened to his tales...
... met lots of lions...
